Curtis
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 23:10 GMT (UK) »
I am new to this forum so any help would be appreciated. ::)
I'm tracing this name for my cousin, whose ancestors kept the Robin Hood Inn in 1901, at Abersychan. his name was John Curtis. ???
He married a Mary Jane Matthews at Pontypool.
My quest, is this Inn still in  existence, has anybody a photograph or postcard of it?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I used Google - have a look at this link and scroll down

Robin Hood Inn  Tel: 01600 715423
126 Monnow Street, Monmouth, NP25 3EQ

http://www.city-visitor.com/abersychan/pubs.html

If you contact the present owners they could perhaps help with a photograph

Many thanks for your comments.I have already looked at the link you suggested, unfortunately that hostelry is in Monmouth and not Abersychan.

Hi,

I found the CURTIS family on the 1901 census, (transcribed as MATIS ::)),  RG13/4945  f.58  p.8  Civil Parish: Abersychan. On the image it shows they are in the Village or Hamlet of:  Cwmnantddu.

I found this 1901 Kelly's entry which might be of interest,

Hopefully this may narrow the search :)

Have you tried Geograph ?

http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=2405469

This link on Geograph has pictures of Abersychan ... and if you then click the name of the man who took the pictures, you can email him, and maybe he can help ?

Daisypetal, ???
Thank you for that, I had looked at the Directory and established a Curtis in Union St., Abersychan, circa 1900 seller of beer and a miner. Right family different generation, but the net is closing. :-\
Lydart,
Thank you too; as a contributor to Geograph up here in the North, I had never given the site a thought. So thank you for stirring up "The Little Grey Cells", and i I'll recheck my files as I have an old map showing the Robin Hood, and can maybe obtain a grid reference from that. Thank you all for your assistance.

P.s. The 1901 census shows that John Curtis was the Landlord. so it was in existence at that point. He raised a family of 11/12 ( two wives ) so the beer was very good and a lot of people drank it!! I think that the Pub was in Cwmnantoer.

Hi, I think you are talking about my family.
The pub is now called The Plasycoed inn and is in cwmffrwdoer. If it is the right family then I have a photo of them outside the said pub. (one of John and Mary's children is my Great Grandma).
Why are you asking? Whats your connection to the family?

A cousin of mine, lately discovered who thought she had no relatives in this area,  and who is now a Grandmother was astonished to discover that she did indeed have lots of relatives in this area and also in S.Wales. :)
Her Mother Mary Jane Jones married my uncle Emlyn Evans, but both her parents died whe she was very young, :( so that she did not know them and she was raised by an aunt, her Mother's sister Mary Elizabeth Jones. Both  were daughters of David Jones and Elizabeth Jane Curtis, who was the daughter of John Curtis & Mary Jane Mathews.
I would be interested in a copy of the photograph if thats possible, and hope thta this fills some gaps for you.
