Grove Street Glasgow 1875
« on: Friday 21 March 08 08:29 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with a description of what Grove Street in Glasgow (Milton? Cowcaddens?) looked like in 1875.  I've tried trawling the web but have found nothing that really indicates the nature of the area at that time.  Was the street in tenements, now demolished?  Was there an orphanage or hospital there?

The address I am particularly interested in is 36 Grove Street - it is where the death of 17 year old Jane Irving is recorded, an orphan, of tuberculosis.

The certificate is witnessed by her uncle who was living in Kirkfieldbank, near Lanark, with whom she was living at the 1871 census.

Thanks!

Grove Street ran from Garscube road to Gardner Street and no longer exists.

The only building of any real note in the street is the Grove Street Institute but that does not seem to have been a residential establishment.

Checking the valuation rolls for 1913 admittedly a good bit after your dates shows that at that time No 36 Grove Street was a tenement building

Hi Bill

Thanks for your information.  I'm intrigued why my "orphan" was living in Grove Street - but I guess I will never know...  perhaps census returns will suggest an answer.

Kind regards

Hi, My family lived at 55 Grove Street - my great grandmother Matilda Taft, her son Matthew Taft (Currie) and my father stayed with them Harry (Henry Birnie). Dad has passed away and if you have any memories of them or the area I would be really interested.
Thanks
