I'm not related to English family but have researched the family connection in Aghadowey. After you've 2/3 posts I can send you a PM (personal message) to explain further.

Richard English (Sam's father) was supposed to have been born in Canada but when they left Crevolea in 1910 he was supposed to be going to Canada but ended up in Scotland instead. Several of Richard's sons did settle in U.S.

Hi All,

my mum was always told that Sam English (the same Sam English posted here - the footballer b 1908) was her uncle and we are sure there is a connection because he looks like us (!) but I'm having trouble connecting the dots and wondered if anyone could help...  My mum (Brenda English) parents died when she was young and she has no family records other than a few photos and oral history.

My great-grandfathers name was Michael English, born about 1883.  My mum said he was Irish and I know he was with the Dublin Fussiliers in Ireland before signing up with the Royal Scots in Edinburgh in 1916.  He married Catherine Quin in Scotland in 1920.  They had two children that I know of - Stella (my grandmother) and Monica English.  Michael died 1936 in Scotland.

His parents were James and Mary English (nee Mullen).    I can't find anything on James and Mary but wondered whether Sam's dad, Richard, could be James' brother?  Is that the connection?  Any help on any of the 'great' relatives would be greatly appreciated.

Sue

Welcome to Rootschat but afraid it looks like being related to Sam English is one of those family stories that isn't likely to be true.
Sam English's father, Richard, was the son of James English and Elizabeth Gresham who married in 1865 in Aghadowey Parish, Co. Londonderry. All the English family in Aghadowey were Presbyterian.

IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists several children for a James English and Mary Mullan/Mullen-
Mary born 28 Dec.1865 Monasterboice, Co. Louth (page 573 in civil register)
Margaret born 8 June 1870 Co.Louth
Owen born 4 June 1872 Co. Louth, Ireland
Catherine born 15 Sept.1876 Co.Louth
Edward born 28 Sept.1879 Garrolagh, Co. Louth
Patrick born 1 Mar.1881 Dysart, Louth, Ireland

This might be the family in 1911 census:

Thanks so much.  I can't for the life of me replicate your search on Family Search.  It's telling me there are no civil register entries for Co. Louth which clearly cannot be correct.  Must be my research skills - if you can tell me how you got to that info I'd be very grateful.  My mum's family was definately Catholic so it adds up!  Thanks again.

Go to advanced search page. Put in 'James English' for father and 'Mary Mullan' for mother and NOTHING else. Then press 'search' button. Children should then come up.
