Do you know Hereford St Nicholas ?
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 17:22 GMT (UK) »
According to my findings my Great Uncle John Thirlwall was an "artist in photography" and had his studio in Palace Chambers,18 King Street.

Does anyone know it and if it still exists as a photographers ?

This is it ...

http://www.blancheparry.com/elizabeth.shtml

The Pilley Photographs
For the known details of these two pictures see Mistress Blanche, Queen Elizabeth I’s Confidante pages 140-142. Walter Pilley arranged for the two oil paintings to be photographed. If the photographer was local then he may have been J. (John) Thirlwall, of 18, King Street, Hereford. Then Elizabeth becomes Queen and the chapters describe Court life. Here Blanche’s particular responsibilities prove to be far more varied than hitherto supposed. We hear about the little musk cat and Elizabeth’s quantity of glorious jewels. We also hear about Blanche’s role in being a confidante for her mistress and even channelling Parliamentary bills. Evidence is given of people she is known to have helped, their difficulties carefully examined by her and the Queen’s wishes carried out. Blanche obtained lands in Herefordshire, Wales and in Yorkshire and the legal cases resulting from some of them, notably Llangorse Lake, are placed in context.

Hi
We have a print from one of his photographs. I don't suppose you know if his plates were put in an archive somewhere or were bought by a rival photographer when the family stopped photography?
They could be very interesting for the history of the area.

Hi Fizzybubble

I have just been going through some old family carte de viste photographs and have found a few taken by J Thirlwall. Sadly I do not know who the individuals are to date them but on the back of the card it says: J Thirlwall successor to T Jones Portrait and Landscape Photographer 18 King Street Hereford.

Hope this might be useful.

Thanks

Anna
