Thanks Jennifer - that has solved (part of) a mystery for me - I couldn't find the family in the 1841 census as I was looking for Thomas Stevens. The rest of the family is all there with the right ages so I'm sure it's them. Wonder where Thomas go to?

Marie / Mousey:

I have been checking through various Essex parish records on a wild goose chase for some Stevens's - I came across some Spurgeons as I went, and remembered seeing the name on this thread so I noted the facts down in case they're of use:

Dedham, 1788 July 17
William Spurgeon of Stratford in the county of Suffolk (bachelor) married Mary Branston of Dedham (widow).

Stanway, 1882 December 23
James Spurgeon, labourer, 21 of Stanway (father = Joseph William Spurgeon, labourer) married Emma Everitt, 19 of Stanway (father = William Everitt, labourer). Witnesses were Frederick William Everitt and Fanny Spurgeon.

Stanway, 1883 May 5
Frederick William Everitt, labourer of Stanway (father = William Everitt) married Fanny Spurgeon of Stanway (father = Joseph William Spurgeon). Witnesses were William Spurgeon and Alice Goody.

cheers,
James

Hello James, I am not sure where you got the death for William 1845, he is alive and kicking aged 80 in Sheffield with his daughter in 1871.

Ah yes, you're right, sorry if that caused any confusion. I have the census record myself so I am not sure where 1845 came from - I'll do some verifying on all my dates over the weekend
