Baptism - HARPER of Eynsham
« on: Monday 31 March 08 14:04 BST (UK) »
Would SKS be able to tell me who the parents of a John Harper are please ?

I've been browsing the Gale website and come across a small piece concerning one John HARPER age 6 in June 1900.

It reports that 'Eynsham schoolboys Edward Bennett (11) Frederick Hall (8) and John Harper (6) were summoned for unlawfully and maliciously damaging certain hay and straw ricks, the property of Frederick Green at Eynsham...by setting fire...damage of £100.'
Bennett was ordered to receieve six strokes and Hall had four strokes.
Harpur was let off as he was so young.

Harpur is one of my husband's key family names, so just wondering if he was one of 'ours'.

Many thanks

Hi Mggirl,

I can't help with a baptism but there's a good match on the 1901 census:

RG13/1393 15 22
Eynsham, Oxfordshire
Mill Street

Emma Harper, head wife, mar, 52
John, son, 7
Annie, dau, 13, domestic servant

All born Eynsham.

The 1891 census shows the father: Albert H Harper, 44, Hay Binder, b. Eynsham

Crikey, he is one of ours then.
Albert and Emma are my husband's Gt Gt Grandparents, making John his Gt Uncle.
The Annie would be Sarah Ann, his Gt Granny

Let's presume it was a schoolboy prank gone wrong ;)

Many thanks

Doesn't sound like a major crime, does it!  :P

Just for the record, Annie is already called Annie in 1891, and there is a birth registered for Annie Harper in Mar 1888 at Witney  ???

Looks like it's different girl then - oops on my part.
My mistake as the Sarah I referred to was born 1871

The last child I have in mine tree for Albert and Emma is John.

Looks like I need to update my tree with an Annie born 1888.  Thanks for the heads up.

Mggirl: My grandfather was Albert Horace Harper (or, possibly, Horace Albert ... he always went by Horace), born in Eynsham in 1893. His father was George Harper. also of Eynsham.
