TYTE Family - Devon
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 00:45 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone researching any TYTE families in Devon, with possible links to Wookey or Wells in Somerset around 1760's to 1780's.  ???

I am looking for the parents or any connections to Samuel Tyte born c1764 who may have come from the Barnstable area and moved to Somerset sometime in the 1780's.  He was a clock/watchmaker/silversmith, as were many of the subsequent Tyte's.

Any info on any possibilities would be much appreciated

Kind Regards

Eve

Hi Deb

Thanks for coming up with these.  I have the copy of Samuel Tyte's will, which names all his children in some detail.  I have also noticed all the references to the Wells Manor leases but have not yet sent off for copies of these.  I believe these are connected more to his first wife's family  Ann Curtis and then of course later Tyte's.

Another kind Rootschatter did a very thorough search for Samuel Tyte in the Wookey Parish Register for me which was where I thought he was born but there was no sign of him or earlier Tyte's hence my quest to try and find where he and his parents came from.

I have an old studio photo of an elderly couple taken around the mid 1800's which has been labelled "Devonshire cousins?" by my late cousin - it's as vague as that so I haven't got much to go on.

Thanks for taking the time to look and of course any further suggestions or info always welcome  :)

Regards

Eve

Hello Eve
I have little in the way of family history of the Tytes but |I do have a clock!!  This is a 30 hour long case clock with a white dial showing "Sam. Tyte Wookey.  It has honeysuckle and strawberries painted in the corners. The case is in oak cross banded in mahoghany.  It has been loved and looked after since we purchased this when we were married in 1973.  It does go but we have not had it working by choice - the bell on the hour is supersonic and terrified the cat - sticking plaster applied helped a bit!!  It was purchased just outside Clevedon in Somerset.  Would love you to see it if you wished.  Not sure how to get in touch personally.  We live in Dorset.  I guess this pinpoints Samuel to Wookey??
Kind regards
