For my benefit, I've drawn up a direct line tree for Robert Murdoch Allison - no dates or siblings but it helps to see where we're going  :)

I have Robert Murdoch, father and son on the 1851 with parents/grandparents. Robert, senior was unmarried so I checked and found a death for Robert in 1897, son Robert was the informant. It is the correct family and i'll put it up shortly.

It appears that Mary Allison and Robert Murdoch never married. Robert's parents were Peter Murdoch, blacksmith and Margaret, m.s. Paterson, both deceased by 1897.

The IGI has two James Garretts b. Inch at roughly the same time. However, the one whose mother was Mary Earle died in 1863 so i would guess that this is your James:

Inch, 25 April 1824 James Garret to William Garret and Mary Ambrose

This also ties in with his children's names.

Jane Garrett (m.s. Neilson) died 22 June 1890, aged 64. Her parents were John Neilson, crofter and Sarah, m.s. Kain, both deceased .
