Not sure if this will come out clearly enough but will try. This is the new tree. The darker green shaded names are the ones that I've not yet found.

Hi there

Picked up that you had info listed on James Garrett married to Jane Neilson, and that they had a daughter, Jane Garrett.

Reason for my interest is that James Garrett and Jane neilson are my great great great grandparents! Will try and explain the link but I'm new to all this. Any dates I have in are rough years of birth (some web sites only say 'about')

James Garrett (1811) and Jane Neilson had a daughter mary and a son William (1846) (and now you seem to suggest another daughter, Jane).

William Garrett (1846) married Helen McMeiken (1856). They had four children, Jane (1879), william (1877), Janet (1881) and Elizabeth (1875).

Jane Garrett (1879) married John Devoy (died 1956). They had two children, Agnes and Mary (1920).

Mary Devoy (1920) married Robert Calvin Newton. They had two children, Robert Ian Newton and Jean Newton.

Robert Ian Newton is my dad!

Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,

Although I am not really into the Garrett line I have had reason to do some research on the name.(I have an unknown Garrett married into the wifes' family)

According to 1861 census James and Jane Garrett had six children.
William 16, John 14,Jane 11,Sarah 8,James 5,Mary 2.

Scotlands peolple list the following dates of children to James Garrett and Jane Neilson
William b.27/05/1844
John     b.14/12/1846
Jane     b. 02/04/1850
Sarah   b.24/03/1853
I have not looked for births of James and Mary.

The census states James age as 38 (1823)Oyster dredger
Jane is 41 (1820)

Hope this is some help to you.

Brian

Hi Missterri,

Sorry I havent replied to your message. Cant figure out how as no 'reply' button on the web site anywhere! Anyway, hopefully you will see this post.

Only further info I have that dosent seem to be mentioned here yet is about James Garrett. He is in an old local newspaper which says the following:-

James Garret claims to be the oldest fisherman in Scotland. He was born at Innermessan, near stranraer in 1811, so that he is now in his 100th year. His mother and father who were also natives of the district, were ages respectively 100 and 103 when they died. James has been a Lochryan fisherman all his life, and during his career he has had many exciting experiences. Once, when fishing off the Ballantrae banks in a heavy sea, the boat was swamped and three of the crew were drowned. In spite of his great age, he enjoys good health, and may be seen daily on the breastwork. William, his son is also a fisherman, and he is now over 70 years of age. He was in the boat with his father when the boating catastrophe referred to occurred, and, like his father, he has had a hard life but is still hale and hearty. The grandson, William Garrett, is also engaged in fishing in Stranraer.

Hi Missterri,

Been reading through all your posts and replies on this matter.  These match into my family tree quite well.  My main names are : Harvey, Saul, Graham and Collison.

My tree contains 3000+ names, including Allison, Garret, Murdoch (many more).

My mother's family, Saul, came from Ireland to Stranraer and blossmed there.
My father's family, Harvey, came from Ireland to the Glasgow area and blossomed there.

Alexander Saul (1851) married Mary Wallace Allison (1834) about 1850
Interesting to note that Alexander Saul was a fisherman on the Oyster Dredger "Dove" that was swamped by a storm on Loch Ryan on 16 October 1867 and there were two others that drowned.  It looks like James and William Garret were also on the same ship when this occurred!

Maybe there are other links we can exchange.

Kind regards,
