Customs and Excise
« on: Friday 11 April 08 19:42 BST (UK) »
The UK H M Customs and Excise was formed in 1909 by the merging of the Board of Customs with the Excise Department of the Inland Revenue.

Customs officers collected the duty on imports and prevented smuggling.

Excise men were responsible for collecting the excise tax on home produced goods.

Ireland had a separate Customs Board from 1807 to 1823  when the United Kingdom board was established.

Anyone looking for information about ancestors who were Customs and Excise officers in Ireland may need to visit both the National Archives of Ireland, Dublin and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast. The reason for this is that some of the records concerning places which are now part of the Irish Republic can be found in Belfast and some records for Northern Ireland can be found in Dublin. http://tinyurl.com/48sd29
