"5th Royal Irish Lancers" 1880's JOHNSTONE (Been stuck for 2 yrs)
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 14:19 BST (UK) »

Makes it blinkin' hard when your family is full of orphans !!

Hit a complete brick wall with an elusive member of the 5th lancers.
William Johnstone (my GGG'father)

All we know (according to his son's marriage cert) is that he was dead by 1909, was a member of the lancers and fathered Thomas Johnstone (mother Margaret Johnstone). Thomas born in Glasgow 1885 and by 6yrs was abandoned (or orphaned). Raised by Michael and Mary Gallagher (Irish).

Cant find a marriage cert for William & Marg. Dont even know whether they were Irish or Scots. My intuition tells me they were Irish, given there son was left with Irish couple and William in the Lancers.

I think I may have found him at Alsershot barracks 1871 cencus, with Michael Gallagher.

FREE BOTTLE OF WHISKY TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP !!  tee hee Thanks in advance.. Penny (this is my last resort)

Have you searched for William in overseas marriages & deaths?
As he was a soldier, it's always worth checking the GRO regimental indices.

5th Lancers:
1864-73 India
1873-81 England
1881-84 Ireland
1885 Sudan (on active service)
1886 England
1888-97 India

He's not listed as killed in Sudan I can say.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Thanks Neil,

I'll have a look, it's a pest William Johnstone is not a unique name, and I just dont know enough basic info on him to identify him among others.

The overseas deaths will be my next step...   Thanks again, Pen
