Hints and Tips Army, Navy, Merchant Seaman records
« Reply #3 on: Tuesday 06 June 06 17:47 BST (UK) »

When researching any generation of your ancestry, you must always locate and examine any additional sources that can provide you with information about your ancestor’s occupation/profession. A good example is Army, Navy, Merchant Seaman, Railway, & Police records etc. If he served in one of the above then there is a good chance that you will be able to trace his date and place of birth, service record and date of death. It is also possible that you can trace a record of his marriage and the names of his children

Thanks for that link, Annie.
I have a certain relation whose name I would love to cross off my family tree, but I can't she's my Great Grandmother Eliza Ann!
Eliza married a carpenter, and later in  life a bricklayer, but in between she seems to have notched a plasterer, a Corporal in the 1st Royals and a Leading Seaman up on her bedpost!  :o
Which one is my ancestor...............only the bricklayer can be discounted, as Grandmother Harriet was born before they met.
It's probably going to be impossible to track down the culprit, but with leads such as this, I can at least try. :)

Celia

I have now found the above website is a link from Old Mersey Times and I cannot put a direct link to it. So just type in
old Mersey times to take you to the site.

I've trawled through this site looking for my mariners. No luck but what a fantastic effort to transcribe all this info. It was on this site that I found 'William Duckling, 14, training for the sea'! The old mersey times site is also an excellent resource.
