I wondered as I've checked marriages of Ann Hodges in Shepton Mallett district and none fit her.  Could she possibly have married in another district?  You do have a problem as there are at least two ann hodges and two James Hodges of roughly the same ages born in Shepton Mallett.  Difficult to know which is yours after 1841.

Can't find George in 1871 but this looks a possibility for daughter Louisa
1871
St Marylebone Middsx
henry G Hodges head M 42(?) Porter Shepton mallet
Caroline wife 26 St Marylebone
Henry H G son 2 St Marylebone
benjamin G son 4mths St Marylebone

This is surely the right family. I'm not sure where the age for Henry of 42 came from as it looks like 26 to me on the original scan, and likewise his place of birth is give as Lambeth Surrey. I'm positive this is young Louisa with her older brother.

I am a bit inclined to think that George and Louisa must have died between 1861 and 1871, as the children seem to have scattered to the four winds in those ten years.

Many thanks indeed for your help with this inquiry.

Kind regards
Philip Candy

Apologies - henry G was b. lambeth Surrey - I did question his age - it is transcribed as 28 - but on image it could ne 48 or even 18 - I think after enlarging it, that it most probably is 28

Good job you are on the ball !

James Hodges 15  is living with William Hodges  20 in 1841 both are journeyman Tailors
Shepton Mallett HO107 963 31 p20

Many thanks Medhist. I had thought this was the right family, but now find that (a) William was already married and living with his wife Zipporah at the time of the 1841 Census, and (2) James's age is out by ten years - something of a show stopper.

I am now inclined to think they are sons of William and Rebeckah HODGES, whose baptisms at the Ebeneezer Chapel in Shepton Mallet are recorded in IGI.

Thanks again for this suggestion.

Kind regards

Philip Candy
