'Chaner child' ?
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 12:09 BST (UK) »
hi all

I did a look up for someone and the boy that I found was referred to as 'Chaner child' in the relationship column.

Has anyone any idea as to what that means?

The image is for George Howard  c1834  Shropshire

1987 / 361 / 16

It refers to both him and his younger brother William as this.

Thanks, Jen

Hi Jen,
I can find no references to a "Chaner Child" perhaps it is a (very) local term for an adopted child, or a step child, or a child from the local workhouse. Hopefully someone will know.

I think it's Chance Child ... I'm not sure if it means "illegitimate" or "orphan" but there is a book of that name

Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Well, following Geoff's interpretation I found 'chance child' in an english-german dictionary:
http://www.dict.cc/english-german/chance-child.html
German Translation: bastard, illegitimate child
