1851 census look up please
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 14:51 BST (UK) »
Can anybody see an Alexander Stephen/Steven with his wife, Margaret on the 1851 census.  They married in Marykirk, Kincardine, in 1849.  Margaret was born c. 1825.  I know they had a son, also Alexander, born c. 1849 according to later census.

I am interested in if they are still in the district in 1851, and any children they may have.  I have no other information on Alexander Snr.

Kind regards

KA

Hi KA

There is one daughter showing for them on IGI, Margaret, b. 1856, also in Marykirk.

Regards.

I can't easily see them in the 1851 census, maybe how they have transcribed? This looks like them in 1861:

Alexr Stephen    45, ag. lab., b. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Margaret Stephen 49, b. Fettercairn, Kincardine
Janet Stephen    22, daughter, b. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Alex Stephen    11, b. Marykirk
Andrew Stephen    8,  b. Marykirk
Margaret Stephen 4,  b. Marykirk

Address: 14 Chapel, Marykirk, Kincardineshire

Looks like Alexander Snr. may have been into his second marriage with Margaret with older daughter Janet showing above.

Many thanks everybody.  Margaret was indeed 'a Farquhar' before her marriage to Alexander.  So it all fits.  I can't understand the three 'Bell' girls though.  And the older Janet Stephen, indicating that Alexander had a previous marriage is a bit of a surprise too.  Looks like lots more to investigate. :D

Hi Ka

Looking at yonderpeasant's entries for 1841/51, the Janet showing on 1861 could be either Alexander or Margaret's child although on track record more likely now to be Margaret's  ::)

Can someone PLEASE find the Hillis family in Co. Monaghan in the 1851 census.  They did leave Ireland, I think, that year too. Here is the family group:
William Hillis (1799) and Mary Boyd (1786) Both William and Mary were from Co Monaghan, Ireland.  William died on Dec.29th, 1881, age 82 and Mary died on April 25th, 1890, age 104.  Dates and ages are from their gravestones at the Durham Cemetery, along with where born, “Native of Co. Monaghan, Ireland.” Children:  James (1830), William (1835), Elizabeth (1836), Sarah (1836, twin to Elizabeth), Mary (1837,  Ann (1839),  Rebecca (1846), Jane (1851).
Could you ever find a marriage record on parents? Thank you for whatever you could do for us.

Hi Pianoman

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

You should try re-posting this request on the Co. Monaghan board here on RootsChat www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,73.0.html where hopefully people with access to specific records for there can try and help. There is no early census information for Ireland but maybe information can be found through different sources.

Good luck with your searches.
