I have traced one branch of my father's family back to John Snell and Sarah Elizabeth Miller of Mount Barker South Australia  who (an old aunt has told me) had a very large family. I have found records for 8 children born to them between 1856 and 1876 so this seems to be correct. The aunt also told me that a daughter Sarah (one I found, born 8/8/1858) raised her younger siblings after her mother or both parents died. She married a man whose last name was Train and lived in Edgeworth Street Prospect South Australia. She was known in the neighbourhood as 'Mother Train'. I have not been able to find John Snell or Sarah Elizabeth Miller in shipping records, but would love to know when they arrived in South Australia, where they were from and if or when they married. I would be most grateful if anyone could provide any information or tell me where I should look.

I am not sure about that story of one or both of the parents passing away whilst the children were young - John does not appear to pass away until 1914, and his marital status is married.  No death for Sarah up to 1915.

This is the only death of the right age.

just adding  to  what others  have allready said  here

John Snell  and Sarah Elizabeth Miller had 15 children from  1852 to 1881

Sarah  the daughter being born  in 1858

by  the time the  last child  was born she was allready 23 .

In  1915 when Frank Percival Snell (a son) enlists in Queensland ,   he  lists  his father John Snell as nok.  you  will see a  letter  to  the father at Franklin Harbour in 1916

This  might be another  John Snell  who  appears  having children  at  the same  time  with an Elizabeth Ann Currow.

it does seem possible that the Father John Snell  died  later than 1914,  his death  may be on  the next lot of  index's

Hi,
Here are some bits about the Trains.

The family seems to have remained in the Green Plains area where Sarah Elizabeth and James were married.

Others may find more children, but 2 sons I came across were in ww1.
Willie Collin was an Orchardist and enlisred at 21 in 1916.  His mother is Next of Kin.
also Stanley Norman a blacksmith aged 22 in 1915.  His mother also is NOK.  Her address at Paskeville is given.  Stanley was a POW in Germany.
There are some Train burials at Green Plains including a mystifying James Hay Train whose burial date is given as 28/12/1806!!

[If you were interested, I think an enquiry to the cemetery would clarify that.]

As Sarah is Nok to the men,we may think James had died by that date.
