Yes,

i had thought of that.
It would be nice toknow who George Weltern was.

Perhaps I will look at marraiges in Plymouth before her arrival in Australia as my next move.

I should also check out deaths for a George Whelton in SA Vic and NSW.

No death for George Weltern (or reasonable variations of the surname) up to 1915 in SA.

Hi Robyn

I had another look this morning and have a Correction
There is a death for a George Western (is that a reasonable variation?)
19/7/1892 aged 76

Unfortunately there is no information on status of marriage or relative.
So there is little to identify him.
He died in Adelaide
ADE
Symbol S
Book203
page 421

I have checked the  marriages for him and can't find any.
The only George Western marriage is in 1889 but he is aged 23.
Like wise, the only births are for the marriage above with children born until 1897.

There is no reference to the name WELTERN for any birth (except Elisabett Lucinda), marriage or death in SA.

It is possible it was recorded wrongly or perhaps conveniently.

I agree with Jenn's posting as the best explanation.
Sorry not to have found any certain answers for you.

Thankyou Robyn for your time.

I agree that Western is a good spelling variant.

I am interested in this as Lucinda/Elizabett became a figure in Australian history when she married Henry Gullett. (His sister is my direct ancestor)

Henry and Lucinda had only daughters one of whom became Doctor Lucy Edith Gullett (1876-1949) She is mentioned in the Austrlian Dictionary of Biography. www.adb.online.anu.edu.au

Hi Robyn,

I can understand why you are so interested in Elisabett as her daughters are fascinating.

It crossed my mind that if Sarah was a single mother in those days she must have had very good family support.

I will be going to the SAGHS library next month where the fiche  of all publicly available BMD records for SA are held. I can view the fiche on the birth of Elizabett and see if anything extra can be gleaned. At least it will show the handwriting for WELTERN.

Do you know when Sarah Gullet arrived in SA?
The only Sarah Gullett I found on a shipping list arrived in 1852  aged
20 a house & nurseymaid from Cheshire
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/epaminondas1852.htm (look under single woman)

I live in the country so don't get to access the library in Adelaide very often but will get back to you after my visit.

Robyn,,
Thank you for your interest in this.

Sarah was b c 1835 in Plymouth Devon which is where her parents married.

Gullett has been transcribed in may different ways GULLEN/GULLEY/GULLET/GUILLET etc etc.

Her brother Thomas migrated in 1854, Henry Gullett and his family in 1852

One of Henry and Lucinda Gullet's  nephews, Sydney Alfred George Gullett, named his son Sydney WOLTAN Gullett in 1896. Woltan has been used subsequently

I will purchase Lucinda's NSW death certificate and see what information it may add.

regards

Robyn

Hi Robyn

I have come across several refernces to the Gullett family in Goverment gazettes particularly for Victoria via worldvitalrecords.com

In a SA gazette 3rd Aug 1854 there is mail for Mrs Sarah Gullet in the published names of unclaimed letters.
The unclaimed letters list published on 9 Sept 1855 has Sarah Gullett.
If only YOU could  read those!
Maybe she (if it is your Sarah) had left for Victoria by 1854.

Regards
Robyn

Robyn,

It would be nice to be able tp get copies of those unclaimed letters. They might tell us lots.

I feel that Sarah may well have been at sea if she was with William Willie as his occupation was mariner.  They lived in Williamstown in Melbourne in 1888 when William died.

Perhaps William Willie was George Weltern??? who changed his name. Possible but unlikely, William gives his parents names as Joseph Willie and Sarah Shace. Samea names on his death certificate. Hard to find in UK records as it is pre civil registraion for both of them.

I have Google searched for Weltern and as a name it is very rare; certanly the ELizabeth Lucinda Weltern registration is the only one in SA!!! (My family history library had the old micrfiche so I checked on the original hadwritten version which was very clearly WELTERN Elizabeth Lucinda.)

Also checked the 1851 Devon census Gulletts without success. (other Gulletts present but not this family.

Definitely no marriage for Sarah George or William in the microfiche (handwritten and difficult to read) Wish I could find Sarah Willie's death registraion and order her certificate!!!!!

Perhaps I will look at QLD where a couple of Gullett's settled in the ear;ly 1900's.

Hi listers:

I have just been contacted by another Gullett descendant.

Sarah Willie nee Gullett died  on board the "Runic" in 1901 and was buried at sea off the Cape of Good Hope.   It is assumed she was going home to England either for good or on a holiday.
