Porteous - Kirkmichael / Kirkpatrick
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 19:17 BST (UK) »
Is there a big house or farm near Kirkpatrick Durham?  Mary Porteous (born 1834 Kirkmichael) was a servant in Kirkpatrick Durham in 1851.  By 1854 she had moved to Kent - but why?  She married a shepherd and never went back.  Possibly she was a servant in a household which spent some part of the year in Kent.  Any ideas on how I might find where she was a servant?

Hi Country Girl,
I have Porteous's in my line farming at Parton. Think a lot of the Porteous's came from Edinburgh way.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for this.  However, my Porteous family don't seem to have extended from Dumfriesshire to Edinburgh.  I have gleaned a little more since my first log, and it seems they were very firmly in the area only a few miles from Dumfries in any direction at any time.  The last known place was Auchenhay, near Corsock.

Hi County Girl
The 1851 Census shows Mary, as you say, as a Farm Servant in the Parish of Kirkpatrick Durham which is in fact in Kircudbrightshire.

She is however with her parents Richard (42)  and Janet Porteous (40)  and her brothers and sisters of whom she is the eldest age 16 Her father is a Farm Labourer.
They are living at Auchanhay Cot. House. Above her family on the Census is a gamily at Auchan Hay but which still seems to be a family who work locally Mole catcher etc.
I suspect the 'big house' you are looking for will be on the previous page.  Auchenhay appears to be in the parish of Borgue.

A spot of googling on Borgue etc. may add to your information.   There has been for a long time a Porteous Research Project which you may want to contact.

Best wishes

Thanks to you both for this information.  It's so exciting when someone unconnected to the family is kind enough to bother to pass on information!  Much appreciated.  I'm drawing a line on my OS map of the area following the farms where Mary's father went in search of work via the places where his ten children were born.  He starts out at Lockerbie and goes via farms just north of Dumfries and then west to Auchenhay then to Urr area.  The Auchenhay census info was interesting - I now need to look at 'the previous/next page'!  Thanks again.

Hi,

I have just started researching my girlfriend's tree, and have come up with a Porteous family in Dumfriesshire.  Coming forward a few years in this thread, does anyone have details of Susan Hastings Porteous marrying William Macaulay in 1910?

I would be grateful for any contact.

However - not too far off. I've found her  on the 1901 in Dunbartonshire but she is down as being born Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

big household - will put it up shortly.
