McGrath, Butler, Power, Adamson, Family Ireland

This is my husbands family and for the life of me i am starting to wonder if i should just get on a plane and go to Ireland
I am not having any luck gaining irish information
What we know about the religion of the family is Catholic but we do not know where and what side it started from am thinking McGrath side and possibly the others as well any help is greatly appreciated as i got help on another subject from you guys


Charles MCGRATH. Born in 1838 in Co Down, Ireland. Charles died on Jul 07 1909 in Kaiapoi, New Zealand; he was 71.

Charles married Margaret ADAMSON.

Before looking at Irish records you need to start in New Zealand and chek all sources to get as much information as possible.
In order to search for information in Irish records you need to know where the family lived (parish if not actual townland) as well as their religion.
Best place to start searching is LDS site www.familysearch.org. There are, for example, several children of Edmund Power and Margaret Butler listed and with the names and dates you could send for a birth certificate which will list the townland where the birth took place.
It would also be a good idea to read about Irish research (either from a book- your local library might have something- or the Internet) to learn what records are available and the dates the records cover.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
