1841 and 1851 census look up - WADDELL
« on: Monday 19 May 08 22:36 BST (UK) »
When Jane Waddle marries in 1858 her parents are stated as John Waddle, Labourer and Catherine Mag*try (very difficult to read - sorry) on the certificate

But when Jane dies in 1915 her parents are on her cert as John Waddle and Betsy Hanlon.

I can only think that Betsy is a step-mother.  However, if anybody can see Jane (b. 1836) Waddle on the 1841 and 1851 census I would be grateful for a look up.  Jane marries in Renfrew.

Regards

Hi KA

Quick dipstick would indicate mother Catherine going by the names of William and Jane's children:

1. CATHERINE VANCE Birth: 08 APR 1859 Bothwell, Lanark
2. WILLIAM VANCE Birth: 11 MAY 1864 Bothwell, Lanark
3. MATTHEW VANCE  Birth: 24 JAN 1866 Dalziel, Lanark
4. MARGARET VANCE Birth: 31 MAR 1868 Bothwell, Lanark
5. JANE VANCE Birth: 10 JUN 1870 Bothwell, Lanark
6. CATHERINE VANCE  Birth: 04 NOV 1872 Bothwell, Lanark
7. MARY VANCE Birth: 15 DEC 1874 Bothwell, Lanark

I'll see if I can find her in the earlier censuses...

Slowly getting there! Jane looks to have been born in Barrhead from the 1881 entry (but not on her 1851 entry which shows Ireland). This is the family's entry in 1851 with father John (probably) remarried to Betsy - Isabella on the entry in 1851:

John Waddell    47, Alum (?spl) Worker, b. ireland
Isabella Waddell 40, b. Ireland
Jane Waddell    18, b. Ireland
Catherine Waddell 12, b. Neilston
Elisabeth Carroll 18, down as 'daughter in law', my guess it is probably step-daughter on original image, b. Ireland
John Carroll    15, as above, but son in law, b. Neilston
Isabella Carroll 12, ditto, b. Barrhead
Patrick Carroll 10, ditto, b. Barrhead

Address: Lochlibo Road, Newton Ralston, Neilston

Now for the 1841...

Frustrating or what! Mother in 1841 is down as Mrs. W  :'(  Everyone showing as born in Ireland apart from youngest Catherine showing Renfrewshire

John Waddle 40, labourer, b. Ireland
Mrs  Waddle 30
Margt Waddle 16
Jean Waddle 8
Ann Waddle 6
Cathrine Waddle 2

Address:  Newton Rolston, Neilston

Your next step would be to contact SP on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/contactus/form.aspx?issue=24 Explain which section you are having a problem reading and they will email back a supposedly better/enhanced section of that image.

Alternatively, you could post that section up here on Rootschat, where people could help to decipher. Or, John Waddle's death cert may well include the name of first and second wives.

Cheers Monica.  Many thanks for all your help.  Typical to get an entry like 'Mrs Waddle'. ;D

I think I will try and trace his death cert.  See what shows up.

Hi,
I'm interested in Jane Waddle since she married a Vance. I'm collating the English, Scottish, Irish, American and other overseas Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch.
My aim is to collect every (!) recorded Vance family and try to piece together the entire picture, using all the available sources and taking into account the genetic data.

I'd really appreciate any information you have about any Vances (a gedcom would be ideal as it saves re-typing) and particularly any ideas, legends, or better still, knowledge, about their origins.

Having all the available information may help in eventually finding some of the earlier generations in Ireland and Scotland.

By the way, as far as I could see they had additionally:
Another Catherine, b ca 1874
Another Mary b ca 1877
and Mathew b 15 Jan 1866.

I have another generation, too, the children of their son John.

And could I ask you what your interest in them is?

Best wishes,

Jamie.

Jamie,

Children of the son, John, would be greatly appreciated.  I have only one, Sarah, b. 1893, and married Robert Delaney in 1917.

My interest is in the Delaney connection.

Herewith attached in two formats the descendants of William Vance and Mary Roger as far as I know them (which includes the two Waddle/Waddell girls who married two brothers, William and Mathew, and their descendants.
I hope this technique works!

I realise that the John I mentioned was actually the son of William Vance and Jane Waddell - anyway here's what I have.

I'd be really grateful for anything you can add to this data.

Regards,
Jamie.
