GOODMAN of Hepworth and Barningham
« on: Friday 23 May 08 19:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for anyone researching the Goodman family of Hepworth and Barningham.
My 4x gt grandfather was John Goodman born abt 1794. He married Mary Ann and moved to Barningham. Most of the Goodmans were millers in both villages and I am interested in any information about the mills.
My 3x gt grandfather was Daniel Goodman bap 18 Feb 1838 in Barningham. He married Emily Starns in 1859 after moving to Haverhill.

Tempsford.

Hi,
I'm not sure, I found a marriage on 26 May 1822 in Gt Ashfield between John Goodman and Mary Ann Perry but don't really know if this is the right couple.

It looks the only possible one on the Suffolk Marriage Index.

I've just checked my Windmill database for both villages....

Barmingham only has one entry for a Goodman.

John Goodman (miller) who's son (Joseph Goodmanwas jailed for 1 year for housebreaking, in 1847.  (From "Bury Saint Edmunds Gaol CD" at BStE Record Office).

Hepworth has plenty of entries.  The mill dates from before 1783.

David Goodman was miller 1855
David & Charles Goodman millers 1864
Charles Goodman miller 1868
Robert Goodman miller 1869 - 1892

In 1847 David Goodman (aged 46) was sentenced to 3 calendar months for refusing to keep the peace towards his wife.  From same source as above.

Other Goodman Mills.....

Charles Goodman @ Market Weston 1874-1879
George Goodman @ Market Weston 1885

These may not be yours.

Happy hunting,

Windy Miller

Hi,
Thanks very much for the interesting information.
John Goodman was my 4x gt grandfather and David was his brother and Charles and Robert were Davids sons.
Charles later moved to the mill at Market Weston and George was his son.
I was interested in the criminal info. I seem to have a very long list of dubious rellies! ;D
Thanks again.

On the mill front...the mill at Hepworth was an open post mill (typical Suffolk, though no roundhouse) and was believed to have started with 4 cloth sails, later two were replaced with patent sails.  She was high enough to get a cart under the mill and was demolished prior to WW1.

I'm not sure which of the 2 mills at Barmingham John Goodman had, and anyway, have little details on them.

Market Weston Mill an was open post mill too.  Working 2 pairs of stones via 4 patent sails, and was also pulled down before WW1.

By the way, any info you might have on the mills and your family connection would be a great addtition to my mill database.

Cheers,
Windy Miller

Hi Windy Miller,
I'm afraid I don't have any information about the mills the Goodman's worked in. Thanks for the details I was very interested about the mill at Hepworth.
All the details I have on the family have been gleaned from census and Hepworth parish registers but I am willing to share any information if you are interested.
Milling seems to have been in the blood as sons became millers as well as far afield as Essex and Lancashire!
