Hi,  I've just found your site. My husband's 4x gt grandfather was Samuel Goodman b c1752 Hepworth (married Sarah Woolsey(?) of Barningham). He owned the mill in Hepworth & when he died in 1819 he left it to his widow who in turn made a will leaving it to their youngest son David Goodman.

My husband's 3x gt grandfather was  David's older brother. He was called Samuel, b.1786 in Hepworth  He inherited other property in Hepworth under the terms of the will, as did his other brothers and sisters.
The will (dated Oct 1824) bequeathes "the windmill, stable, cart shed, and outbuildings and lands lying on the north side of the Turnpike road in the parish of Hepworth" We  have located it on the tithe map of 1855 & in the rent register. We have also visited the site in the village.

I'm interested in exchanging more info about the Goodmans and also the Holdens of Hepworth. (Samuel's daughter Mary Ann Goodman married David Holden in 1839).  from  Gaskell

Hi Tempsford & Gaskell,

I'm afraid the info I post awhile back if full extent of my Goodman data.  Your posting about your husband's 4xgt grandfather is really interesting.  The mill was mapped in 1783, and it is almost certain that Samuel was miller then; that would mean that the Goodman's milled there for over 100 years!

Are you related to Berrybrook?  See link, as they too are looking for Hepworth/Goodman history.

Hi Gaskell,
My 5x gt grandparents were Samuel and Sarah!
I am descended through their son John who married Mary Ann Perry in 1822.
I had no idea Samuel owned the mill at Hepworth. Very interesting.
Would be pleased to swap information.

Tempsford.

Hi Tempsford,  re the mill at Hepworth: Samuel Goodman left it to his wife
Sarah who in turn bequeathed it to their youngest son, David. I have a copy of the will ,which mentions their other children including your John Goodman.

I'd be happy to swap info but don't know where to start, so perhaps you could send me a few queries.   We live in Suffolk, about 20 miles south west of Hepworth  and Barningham,  and about 8 miles east of Haverhill. I visit the Suffolk record office at Bury occasionally.

Hope to hear from you soon  -   Gaskell   (my first name is Judith by the way; Gaskell was my maiden name   - my lot are all from "oop North")
