CathyMJP Scavenger Hunt. Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 12:57 BST (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and it's CathyMJP's turn, and it's a real mystery - it could be an Agatha Christie novel but I'm sure you'll help with this brick wall.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Barbara

                              ******************************

Two years ago I was contacted by a very distant cousin who needed help to sort out all the 'Edmunds' in the family tree.

We discovered that there was a mystery husband - a mystery in as much as apart from his marriage to Mary Jane Hogg  - we could not find him on census etc.  Graham and I have both drawn a blank trying to find George.

Our quest therefore, is to find George Watkins Sully.

Mary Jane Arblaster was born in Aldridge on 19th April 1855, the daughter of Edmund and Jane Arblaster.  on the 16th May 1876 she had an illigitmate child Albert Henry at Claines in the County of Worcester.  She then moved to Middlesbrough and on the 4th September 1879 she married William Hogg.  On 27th July 1898 William Hogg died at the age of 59.

On the 29th September 1898 less than three months after William's death, she remarried George Watkins Sully.

The only information about George that we have was taken off the marriage certificate.

Married 29th September 1898, George Watkins Sully aged 30 a Bachelor.  Profession Shipbuilder living at 5 Calthorpe Street.  Father William Sully a Fitter who is presumably still alive as not marked as dead  - Mary Jane's father Edmund is marked as deceased.  George is some 14 years younger than Mary Jane.  They were married in the Parish Church in the Parish of St. Paul Middlesborough.

On the 1901 Census RG13.4576

In the Parish of St. John Middlesborough the following entries are made

49 Marton Road.

Mary J. Sully (Head)  M. aged 45 no Occupation. Born Staffs Aldridge
Arthur H. Arblaster (this is Albert)  son. single aged 25 Occupation ? shipyard born Fearnes Heath Worcestershire
Agnes Hogg, daughter 17born Middlesbrough
Sarah Hogg, daughtger aged 13 born Middlesbrough
George Hogg, son , aged 6 born middlesbrough

There are also Boarders

Perry Clark, aged 19 born Gildersome, Yorkshire
M. Cornstock aged 47 born USA

Mary Jane died on the 24 October 1923.  She was still living at 49 Marton Road.  Her occupation is listed as Wife of George Sully a Ships Plater and the death was recorded by her son G. Hogg who was present at her death.

Thank you for your help

Could this be him in 1901

George Sully boarder aged 35 widower Boilermaker London.. ( age out by 2 years 1866)

Could be that the entry of Widower is incorrect?

Hi found this marriage:
William Sulley jun q 1864 Glamorgan, newport M
odd number of people ... doing cross reference there are these females;
Harriet WATKINS
Jane WATKINS
Mary Ellen WATKINS

I am thinking that Watkins may have been George's mother's maiden name
