Burials at York Place Chapel, Swansea
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 23:56 BST (UK) »
I was just wondering whether anyone here had ancestors/relatives buried at this Chapel in York Street, Swansea.

The Church dates back to 1830 and there are  gravestones outside and memorial tablets inside the church.  Anyone got any connections?  I have been a member of this Church all my life, and have recently taken over as caretaker.

There are some prominent memorials in the entrance porch,  and a remembrance garden to Rev. Roberts, father of the Llanelli born actress Rachel Roberts.

Do the surnames Rayner or Woollacott mean anything to anyone?   These people must have been wealthy/prominent in the town because of the size of their memorials.   They are at least 8 feet tall.

Hello, I was so excited to see your message, the Woollacotts are my ancestors. I would love to see the memorials, can you tell me when the church is open?

Thank you, Sue.

Hi Welshgirl  Can I push my luck :)  Hoping to find some trace of OH's family, the Peakes, who lived in Swansea during 19th century.  No trace of Peakes (particularly Nelly/Eleanor who died some time shortly after 1910) I suppose.....

Sue

I've only just read your reply to my posting.  Sincere apologies!

The Church is open every Sunday morning for a service at 11.00am.  The Church is generally open beforehand at about 10.40am, and the large black memorial is just inside the main door in the porch area.

Alternatively, I am available on Friday and Saturday mornings and if you would like to e-mail me, I could arrange to meet you there, and open up the church for you to see the Woollacott memorial.

For your information, here is an accurate transcription of the memorial stone.

I think the gravestones are pre-1910, but I'll look for you anyway.  They have  mostly been eroded by the elements and time.    A lot of the old church records are with the Archives in County Hall and I should imagine thats where the burial records are kept.

:) Thanks that is fine. We would like to photograph the memorial. We were planning to try to do that on Monday before the Sisterhood Meeting takes place. If that does not work we will go to plan B as you suggest. We also need to visit the Archives as we have not checked through the Baptist Church records yet. Can you e-mail us on suenandy at thorndy dot fsnet dot co dot uk?

Many thanks. Sue.
