Hi Cougar,

Depends on your viewpoint. Queen Victoria was a Guelph of Hanover. If the Hanoverian's had not the Salic Law, she would have been Queen of Hanover and therefore Her Hanoverian Majesty as well as Her Britannic Majesty as had been her forebears William IV, George IV, George III. Bit embarrassing in 1914. George II and George I were Electors of Hanover, and for that matter George III for a while.

Of course, Kaiser Wilhelm II was Queen Victoria's grandson, mother, Victoria's daughter Vicky, Queen of King Frederick III King of Prussia. She had herself buried naked in a Union Jack. Wilhelm II was often in UK strutting about in his Death Heads Hussar uniform amongst others, visiting grandmama. Later, at least one other member of the family wore a black uniform with deaths head insignia but that's another matter.

Strange, the RAF bombed the hell out of Hamburg. My Fathers brothers last bombing mission was over Coburg (Prince Albert) 10/11 August 1940. They got him on the way back over Holland.

Now - would that have been a good or a bad thing to do one wonders?
My goodness you know your history.
Cougar

Methinks Roger has read Queen Victoria by Lytton Strachey - which was an A level set book in English Literature in 1960-62 ....  which makes him aged 61-62 now.  Am I right?  Thank you, Cougar, for all the transcriptions

What a worry it is when 'what we have read' can give away our age.
Thankfully it wasn't something on our curriculum - so my 'dotage' is still intact.
You are welcome - and hope they have been of some help.

Hi Cougar

Do you know anything about The House of Mercy, Highgate?

I have an birthday book, left to me by an aunt.  In it there is
an entry on 19 January 1905 saying"Came to House of Mercy Highgate as Matron".  Whoever this was, it was not my late aunt, or as far as I know any other relative.

I have reason to believe that the birthday book belonged to an Eliza Ellen Dunaway, although I can't find any connection between her and my family.

The search I've made on the web doesn't come up with much about the House of Mercy.

I would be interested to hear anything else that you can find out.

Thanks and regards

Christine

Hi Christine,
OK - here are a few bits and pieces.  There seem to be records around for the House of Mercy - so you may be able to find out who this person was.  I gather you don't have her name??

Your best bet will be to
Send an email to the Archivist,  Richard  Knight

Highgate Library: - email to (as I have it below) :
send camden local studies and archives centre your enquiry

also the Guildhall hold this manuscript.

LONDON DIOCESAN PENITENTIARY, of Park house, Highgate, established in 1854 for the "reception and reformation of fallen women". Taken over in 1900 by the Clewer sisters, and became known at a later date as the House of Mercy. Closed in 1940. 1854-1952. Also deeds from 1732. L 22.86 Ms 18532-

Christina Rossetti was an Associate Sister of Mercy at Highgate Penitentiary which is probably no help to you.........there is an Anglican related report on the net which was done in 2006 - so plenty of data is around.

In North Hill the largest house, and the farthest back from the road, was Park House, which had been converted into a refuge for prostitutes in 1848 and leased as the London Diocesan Penitentiary (later the House of Mercy) in 1855. It had beds for 60 girls in 1877, was taken over by the Clewer Sisters in 1900, and closed in 1940,   From: 'Hornsey, including Highgate: Highgate', A History of the County of Middlesex: Volume 6: Friern Barnet, Finchley, Hornsey with Highgate (1980), pp. 122-135. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22519. Date accessed: 26 February 2008.

Let me know how you get on with the archivist - think he will probably be the best one to help you.
