Sgt Major William Roe - help!!
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 17:51 BST (UK) »
I hope you can help me  ???

We were left some family history info.
One part was a family tree; I've done quite a bit on this and now think the tree I have is correct. Nearly at the root of this tree is a WILLIAM ROE b 1815 in Bramshot Hampshire.

BUT... in the grandparents book there is lots of info about a SGT MAJOR WILLIAM ROE 1791 - 1868. This William Roe had a long military history and there is a copy of a book detailing 50 years service with the 22 Regiment of Foot. He enlisted 6 Sep 1833 and seems to have worked his way up to being Sgt Maj from 4 Sep 1849 - 26 Sep 1854.

My question is about how the Sgt Major William is related to us, if at all - I get the feeling the family are confusing him with the other William Roe from the book even though there is an obvious discrepancy in the dates, but at the same time I have not been able to prove or disprove any link. However, I can find nothing on the Sgt Major as i have no other info.

Can anybody help please?
I'd be most grateful :)

It looks like the William Roe that enlisted in 1833 was born in Offaly, Ireland.
His service record is at the NA in WO 97/424/80.

Was he married?
If so, what was his wife's name?

The William Roe referenced in that NA record must have been born in 1815 (aged 68 in 1883). He certainly had 50 years service by the looks of things.

Birr was an army camp so it's possible that his father was also a soldier and perhaps he was the one born in 1791.

Hi

so it's possible that his father was also a soldier and perhaps he was the one born in 1791.

It seem to rule the elder one from being his father then.

The plot thickens.

I can't find the parents marriage either  ??? Have been looking for ages. It did say that they were married in Arreton IOW Hampshire on the tree I was left, but haven't been able to prove that so far. I posted on here, but noone was able to find.
It's all a bit of a mystery  ???
I've posted on the other link Sandy put up - there are too many dates and too many William Roes!  ???  ???  ???
