Hi Beannie,

Haven't forgotten about you - working merrily away on that terrific information plus some other work from my Home County - dear old Fife. It's simply grand when a group of people can work together in harmony and come up with such great detail. I just love that part of my hobby, but, unfortunately I tend to forget certain details unless I record them in my computer files. It can be most frustrating, but I have no choice in the matter - I simply have to continue taking medication.

Again, very many thanks for that wonderful slab of information, it's greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Tom.

Hi!

I've just managed to surface after plumbing the depths! No, just kidding, because, quite seriously, I don't think that I've done too badly at all over the past couple of days  :)

Let's take a much closer look at Hugh McDonald and his wife, Agnes Fleming. Hugh would have been born around 1800 and Agnes about 1801. We know that Hugh died in Christmas Day 1877 and Agnes had died about four months earlier on 24th August, 1877.

I was lucky enough to find an extracted Marriage Certificate which stated:

Source Info:  Batch No: M118984  Date:   1818-1839.
Source Call No: 1068041.

Hugh McDonald married Agnes Fleming on 10th April, 1828 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

I also managed to find details of some of their children on the IGI:

William McDonald b/chr. 6th May, 1829 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
James McDonald b/chr 29th September, 1833 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
David McDonald b/chr. 3rd May, 1836 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. He went on to marry Catherine Bathgate, who died 14th January, 1887 aged 50.
Agnes McDonald b/chr. 13th June, 1841 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

I will continue with my results on the next posting.

Best wishes to you all.

Tom.

Hi!

I invite you now to take a look at the family of James McDonald and his wife Jane McCubbin. I couldn't see an extracted marriage certificate on the IGI - just a couple of submitted ones after 1991 by members of the LDS. Not to worry too much about that because, I did manage to find some quite relevant information.

James died on 25th November, 1883, aged 94 and his wife, Jane McCubbin had died on 14th June, 1861, aged 64.

Their children:

William McDonald  chr. 25th January, 1814 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Samuel McDonald chr. 1st June, 1817 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
James McDonald chr. 25th August, 1819 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Hugh McDonald chr. 20th July, 1826 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Rachel McDonald chr. about 1830 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Margaret McDonald chr. 6th January, 1831 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
John McDonald chr. 17th March, 1833 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Thomas McDonald chr. 28th August, 1835 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

My next posting will take us forward quite a few years and it's quite an important one, because MAYBE, just MAYBE it gives me that link that I'm searching for - the link with the Glasgow area of Lanarkshire, where I believe, (rightly or wrongly),that John Jackson FERNS met up with Elizabeth McDonald, his first wife.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi!

I wonder if this is going to be one of those all-important links that I've been searching for over some considerable time.

I had a good, hard look at the following information, and when you do the same, will you agree that the old gentleman that we are looking at is the widower of Jane McCubbin? Jane, you will remember is the lady who had died on 14th June, 1861 at the age of 64.

1881 Census.

Dwelling: 62 Mount Street,
Census Place:  Barony, Lanarkshire.
Source: FHL Film 0203663  GRO Ref: Vol: 644-9  Enum Dist: 67  Page 1

James McDonald  Head Widower  Age 90  Retired Ag. Lab. b. Stoneykirk, Wig.
Jane McDonald      Daur    Unmarr   "     52 Laundress          b. Stoneykirk, Wig.
Jane Crammond Boarder Unmarr   "     16 Butcher's Asst.   b. Glasgow, Lanark.

If what I think is correct, then we should pencill in Jane into the list that I gave you of the children of James McDonald and Jane McCubbin.

Now, what I would give for a look at the Death Certificate of the old man shown above!

My very best wishes to all,

Tom.

Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

My very best wishes,

Hi!

Although we have discussed the McDonalds born in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire and will continue to do so on this posting, let's also take a look at Kirkmaiden by Drummore, Wigtownshire which is about 10 miles to the south of Stoneykirk.

There is an extracted marriage certificate:

Batch No: M118904  Dates: 1779-1854  Source Call No: 1068038

James McDonald married Rachel Campbell on the 21st June, 1787 at Kirkmaiden by Drummore, Wigtownshire.

I also have extracted birth/christening records for their children, i.e. Batch No's: C118902 and C118982.

William McDonald chr. 29th March, 1789 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
James McDonald chr. 30th January, 1792 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Samuel McDonald chr. 9th June, 1795 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
David McDonald chr. 3rd August, 1800 at Kirkmaiden by Drummore, Wigtown.

As we can now see, the McDonalds were quite concentrated in the Wigtown Peninsula from Stranraer on the shores of Loch Ryan almost down to the Mull of Galloway.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi!

In my previous posting I mentioned James McDonald who married Rachel Campbell in 1787 at Kirkmaiden by Drummore in Wigtownshire. In this posting we will be taking a look at another James McDonald, but 62 years later and at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

We find an extracted Marriage Certificate on Batch No: M118985  Dates: 1839-1854  SCN: 1068041.

James McDonald married Elizabeth Buyers on the 13th December, 1849 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.

Now we move forward in time again to the time of the Census taken in 1881.

Dwelling:   Clenoch Parks.
Census Place:   Inch, Wigtownshire.
Source:   FHL Film 0224060  GRO Ref: Vol: 886  Enum Dist: 10  Page: 4.

James McDonald  Head  Age 53  Agr. Lab.  born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Elizabeth Buyers Wife    Age 47                  born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Mary McDonald    Daur   Age 20 Dressmaker born at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire
James McDonald  Son    Age 13  Scholar     born Kirkcolm, Wigtown.
Ann McDonald      Daur   Age 11  Scholar     born Kirkcolm, Wigtown.
Mary Steen  Grand.Dau Age 3                     born at Stranraer, Wigtown.

The distance between Stranraer and Stoneykirk is only about 6 miles and it's about 12 miles from Kirkcolm to Stoneykirk.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi!,

On Saturday, 5th July, 2008, Beannie was kind enough to supply us with some MI's from the cemetery at Stoneykirk in Wigtownshire. In that posting, she made mention of the connections between the McGill's and the Marshall's and therefore, the McDonald's. I have to admit, I thought that I was going to be in for a pretty torrid time because, surely I was going to become involved once again with the Emerald Isle. I hasten to add, that it's the difficulty in retrieving data from Ireland that was going to give me such a time. I simply love Ireland, and look back on a business trip to Clonmel back in 1988 as a wonderful experience.

I wasn't far wrong though, because I was looking at some records from an 1881 Census, and the information that I managed to extract was quite an eye-opener.

Marianne (or Mary Ann) Hamilton was shown on the Census as a Widow. , who had been born in Ireland. After a bit of work, I found that her husband had been William McGill. I then found an extracted Marriage Certificate on Batch No: M118871  Date: 1855-1875  SCN: 6035516.

William McGill married Marianne Hamilton on the 9th of June, 1865 at Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire.

However, something simply didn't add up on the census, because there were a couple of children there with birth dates of 1857 and 1861 and in their mother's Maiden Name. Let's take a closer look.

Marianne McGill  Widow  Age 44 born in Ireland  Maiden Surname: Hamilton.
Rebecca Hamilton Dau    Age 23 born 17th Aug. 1857 at Kirkcolm. Ment. Defect.
William Hamilton  Son     Age 18 born 13th Sept. 1861 at Kirkcolm. Ment. Defect.
Peter Cunningham McGill Age 15 born 13th Dec. 1866 at Kirkcolm.
Mary Jane McGill                Age 7 born 11th Nov. 1872 at Kirkcolm.

So, once again, we are seeing yet another reference to a birthplace in Ireland.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hi beanie

Might be worthwhile starting a new thread for your lookup offer. This one looks to have become a discussion of one person's family
