Census Look-up please - 1841/51/61 MORGAN in Skenfrith - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 04:03 BST (UK) »
Would it be possible to find this family - a William Morgan, blacksmith, and wife Ann in Skenfrith
Daughter Ann born 1829, other siblings Esther 1826 and Jane 1833, not sure when parents were married and they may have had other children
Ann married Thomas Wilcox in 1852

I especially would like to know if mother Ann was born out of county as there is an Ann Morgan, widow, age 75, born Orcop, Hereford, in Skenfrith in 1871 with 2 grandchildren surnamed Morgan
suggesting that if this is the right Ann she also had a son and she would be about the right age

Thanks
SC

Hi Karenlee

Thank you very much for the census look-up, I think this is the family I'm looking for and yet another Herefordshire connection! (if it's Orcop its Hereford and that's what it is in 1871)
So William and Ann were probably married in Herefordshire
Also in Skenfrith in 1881 there is a Thomas Morgan born Hereford with a wife from Skenfrith so he could well be theirs too

Hi Cas
Thanks for the link - I have actually used it before, great site, and where I found Ann's christening and the two siblings and her marriage - also found a marriage for the Esther in 1846 to a 70 yr old widower (probably her employer!)
Slowly this is coming together
Thanks to you both

Hi--

Your Morgan family interests me because they have a few Merediths enumerated nearby in 1841--my Mary Prosser, who married James Cowles Morgan in Garway, Herefordshire in 1816 is the daughter of William Prosser and Elizabeth Meredith. James Cowles Morgan was baptized in Skenfrith and several members of his family are living there in 1841.

Would you please share the maiden name of William's wife with me?

Thank you--
Susan

Hi theo

I see you are interested in a possible link between your James Morgan and my Morgan family

Unfortunately I do not yet have William's marriage to Ann confirmed, only that it probably took place in Herefordshire before 1826

However I do not think that it was the one in 1822 on the IGI for a William Morgan and Hannah Meredith - in view of some recent research I have done I think that one could be too late

William and Ann had a child in Hereford before moving to Skenfrith so their marriage is now more likely around 1820

SC, thanks so much!

Do you think that Lydia, their granddaughter, might possibly be this Lydia Morgan from the page below?
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/Skenfrith%20Baptisms%201813-1837.htm

Her age in the 1841 census seems pretty close to that baptism date?

My ancestor's older brother, Joseph Austin Morgan of Skenfrith, does have a daughter named Caroline but I think she'd only be about 12 when Lydia was baptized. I guess it's a possibility still, though. (This Caroline Morgan was baptized 12 May 1828 in Skenfrith.) I haven't tracked Joseph Austin Morgan's family through all the censuses yet, so I don't know much about them right now...I could be mistaken and maybe I'll find a Lydia there after all!

A Caroline Morgan is in the Monumental Inscription index. Her age doesn't quite match up with the baptism date of Joseph and Mary's Caroline above (too young), but she is buried in the same cemetery section with them, so I guess it's her? Both of her parents died before she did in 1857 and maybe whoever gave the info didn't know the right age? There are no other Caroline Morgans for Skenfrith listed there. Very few Morgans for Skenfrith there at all!

I really hope I haven't bored you silly with something that turns out not to pertain to you!

Thanks again,
Susan
(I can't get Hugh Wallis' IGI site anymore and I'm really feeling slowed down now--I appreciate your response very much!)

Sorry--I've finally realized that you are about 20 steps ahead of me!

Are these your's?
1. CAROLINE MORGAN  - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 DEC 1820 Llanwarne, Hereford, England

2. ELIZABETH MORGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 09 NOV 1823 Llanwarne, Hereford, England

Do you think it's possible that William was married to an Ann who died, then married Hannah Meredith afterward? Sorry, I am very determined to have you be related to me somehow--either Morgan or Meredith! :)

I found a Caroline Morgan (22y, b. Monmouthshire) in 1851 in household of Charles Pritchard of Penalt, Monmouthshire, enumerated as a servant.  A Pritchard visitor there was b. Skenfrith. There is a Walter Meredith, 19, b. Monmouthshire working there as well.

I believe that my Caroline Morgan is in the household of Henry Lewis, 35, Abbe Dore, Herefordshire in 1851...
