Where are Strahurley & Trentagh
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 11:30 BST (UK) »
Hi All, Still on my McElhinney /Boyle search, in around the
Kilmacrenan / Letterkenny area's.

+ A couple of more questions if I may?

My GG Grandfather was James Boyle m to Sarah McElhinney (+ var)  GV notes James (and a John Boyle)  in Bellanascaddan, along with
a John McElhinney & Rep. Chas McElhinney.

John McElhinney (as above) will found on Proni.

Title:
Forename:  John
Surname:  McElhinney
Alt Surname:
Date Of Death:  28/04/1885
Date Of Grant:  10/06/1891
Effects:  Effects £71
Registry:  Londonderry

Full Abstract:
The Will of John M'Elhinney late of Ballinascadden County Donegal Farmer who died 28 April 1885 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Robert Gregg of Moneylaggin in said County Farmer the surviving Executor.

John McElhinney's land at Bellanascaddan went to Charles Boyle
(son of James & Sarah Boyle ms McElhinney) he died 1904 - land passed
on to his wife - Julia McFadden (originally from Churchill).

John McElhinney witnessed the marriage of James & Sarah's daughter
Sarah Boyle - 1874, St.Columba's RC - Termon, Kilmacrenan (my G G.Mother)

A William McElhinney witnessed the marriage of Charles Boyle 1873
to Julia McFadden - Churchill.

The children of James & Sarah Boyle (ms McElhinney) were RC.  Although
I believe John McElhinney was not.    What was the position back then
on different religious denominations marrying? if any!

Have attached a copy of the GV.

Any assistance appreciated.

Thank you

Are Strahurley and Trentagh supposed to be in Co. Donegal? Couldn't find them under townlands on www.thecore.com/seanruad.

Mixed marriages did happen. The Catholic church's position was that children of mixed (Catholic-Protestant) marriages should be brought up as Catholics although that didn't always happen.

hello,
my understanding is that it was not until 1905 that the Catholic church insisted that children of mixed marriages be brought up as Catholics. Before that it was common for"boys to follow the father and girls to follow the mother"

Thanks for responding, appreciated..

So far,all James & Sarah's children (that I've found) were RC.
I've found some descendants in Philladephia PA, and also in
New Jersey - my Branch to Glasgow - Scotland.

The place/Townland named Strahurley was where 'a'
Charles McElhinney died, no idea if he is related, but the
only Charles McElhinney listed.

A large nunber of Mcelhinney's in Iowa of COI/Presby/Methodist
religion, many with the same given names as my Sarah Mcelhinney's
children

Trentagh I've been advised is also in Co.Donegal - in the Killmacrenan
area, I've not found it either!

I know this is long after the original post, but there is a Strahirley just southeast of Letterkenny next to Bonagee. Here is a shortcut to the Google Map:  https://goo.gl/maps/bPZ7iTenjS52.

I have come across the name McElhinney before in my own research, I believe.
