COMPLETED- Farley- Daughter of John Morrison & Robina Ross

Greetings,

I've just found a marriage cert which states that a Farley Morrison from County Tain, Scotland, was the daughter of John Morrison and Robina Ross.  On her death certificate it says her mother was Mary.

I'd go with the Robina as Farley was present at that one. 

Any information would be gratefully received.

When did Farley marry? There's a (confusingly, male!) christening for a Fairley Anderson Morrison on the 31st March 1837 in Durness, Sutherland, parents John Morrison and Robina Ross. Other children were Ann, Betty, James and Mary.

On ScotlandsPeople, the gender is listed as unknown. Likely because it's not mentioned on the actual image.

Hello J,

I'm new to this RootsChat gadget -- hence the delayed response to your query -- but I'm quite intrigued by this thread.  Here's why:

My wife is descended from Farley's (or Fairly's) brother James.  Yes, John and Robina were her parents.  Robina originally hailed from Tain, which is located in Ross & Cromarty on Dornoch Firth, and she lived there in the 1860s after the presumed death of her husband.  But our handed-down-by-word-of-mouth-for-a-hundred-years information was that she and her sister Ann emigrated to Australia around 1856.  It's always been thought that that she married there, but there is no identification of her husband.  It's also said that two sons were born in Australia but that's all we know.  Or thought we knew.

It's entirely possible -- or probable -- that our information is wobbly.  I'd be curious to know the names, dates and places that appear on your certificates.  This has been a long-standing mystery in the family and hopefully we can supply you with some information about her many siblings and nephews and nieces!

I have just downloaded the birth registration for Fairley and the 1851 census for her family. Fairley isn't on it, or showing anywhere. Durness 048/3/1 village of Lead. My search was for mother Robina. Those listed John 44, Robina 36, Mary 12 , James 9, Ann 8, Betsy 6 and William 4.

Fairley was born 1837

What I can't find is the family on the 1841 Census. I've just downloaded one - 048/4/5 that had a daughter Mary close in age, but it was not them.

Any advice re: the 1841 most appreciated. I have 8 credits left on Scotsfolk.

I have found Ann sister of Fairlie and have been working on her family in Victoria, Australia. Mostly around Melbourne.

I only began, today and still have more searching to do.

Fairlie and Ann Morrison arrived to Melbourne on the ACCRINGTON in1862.
