Rope making in macclesfield

one of my ancestors gave his occuption as rope making in the early 19thcent in Sutton in Macclesfield no records anywhere of this industry taking place ther any ideas thanks ::)

Only thing I can think of is that rope/jute/silk use similar methods of production - perhaps it was a "spin off" from the silk mills at Macclesfield.

Also about that time the Macclesfield canal would have been built and the boats would have used lots of ropes.

Nearest rope makers I know are Chester and Glossop.

Not much help - but something to follow up!!

In the Pigot & Co Commercial Directory of 1834 a George Booth of Fountain St, Sutton (Macclesfield) was listed as a Rope and Twine Maker.

There was also a George Leversage of Chester gate(Macclesfield).

               RE your ancester George Booth ropemaker Sutton,
do you have or want the early 41/51 census details,noticed them yesterday while trawling through,also noticed he was from Newcastle Staffs, there was another George Booth also in Sutton ropemaker also from Newcastle Staffs, maybe father? if you want details let me know.

Thank you Peter, these are the ones, but a few must have died and a few more were  born on the 1861 census.The George Booth who is in the Staffordshire look up is this Georges father, born 1779  married to a Sarah Ashton,born 1783 married, 7 May 1804 and had George Booth 19 Jan 1817 This sounds Muddled ::)
