Any information on Mary or Maria Doolan b c1830
« on: Monday 14 July 08 05:54 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information on my gg grandmother. She emigrated out from Ireland - arriving in Australia with her sister Catherine in August 1857 on the City of Bristol. There seems to be some confusion about the date of her birth as it alternates between 1830 and 1833. In the Dictionary of Western Australians it says that they came from Tipperary - but provides no other details. Tipperary is also listed on her death certificate as being her birth place.

On her death certificate she is named as Julia Maria - but on other references such as the birth of her children etc she is generally called Mary - although sometimes Maria.

Any hints on where to start with this one would be appreciated. There is an IGI reference to her sister Catherine marrying here in Western Australia and their parents are given as Patrick and Mary Doolan - sometimes spelled Dolan. This family is from the Parish of Aglish, Portnahully, Kilkenny.  I have been unable to substantiate any of this.

Regards
Debbie

Hi Debbie
I've just started looking into my cousins Doolan family. I've hit a brick wall whilst trying to prove just who's Doolans are who. It appears they all took flight out of Tipperary around the 1850's as I'm finding them off to the USA, Sydney, Brisbane & now yours off to Perth.
There seems to have been no plans to stick together almost as if they were desperate to get out they just got on the first ship.
Not so ... further research revealed the churches were heavily involved is advising the "not doing so well" of their flock that they should emigrate so all of this family would have gone on this ship whilst those from another parish would have gone elsewhere. This makes me believe that the Doolans were of a rather extended family covering several parishes.
As I learn more of my John Doolan 1831-1899 I'll keep your Julia Maria Doolan in mind.

Hi Rob,
I'm looking for my relatives who emigrated from Co. Offaly [then called Kings county] sometime after 1890. Winnyfred and Peter Doolan and their four children Peter, Roseanne, Catherine and Mary Ellen.
Winnyfred had  sisters Catherine and Mary and brothers James, Thomas [twins] and Daniel, some or all of these had emigrated to Australia before her.
They may have settled in Sydney and worked in or owned a draper shop, Winnyfred and family may have gone to Perth.
bye for now
Tom.

[Winnyfred's husband was Patrick not Peter, my mistake.]
That family went to Australia.

Rose Nell, Mary Doolan, Aunts of my Mother went to New York.

Hi Tom
The Doolans are my cousins family so I don't really have much on them. My Doolans all settled around Glen Innes on top of the ranges in northern NSW.

Solid info is:
John Doolan
b. 1831 London, England
d. 20 Nov 1899 Glen Innes, NSW, Australia
m. Quinn, Rosanna 27 Dec 1876 Furracabad, NSW, Australia (Glen Innes)

About Doolan, John
Was a farmer at Furracabad, NSW
Died 1899 Glen Innes aged 68 NSW BDM 13127/1899
Possibly arrived in Sydney on the David McIver 19th May 1852 aged 20 with his brother & sister Mary aged 18 who married John Flinne in 1862 at Scone. Their children are in the name of Flinn.

The David McIver passenger list (Reel 2136, [4/4790] Page 176; Reel 2463, [4/4923]) shows them as:
DOOLAN   John   20
DOOLAN   Mary   18
DOOLAN   William   24
Death Citation
NSW Births Deaths Marriages
(Direct & primary evidence)
Date: 1899
Text: NSW BDM 13127/1899
Marriage (m. Quinn, Rosanna) Citation
NSW Births Deaths Marriages
(Direct & primary evidence)
Date: 1876
Text: NSW BDM 4470/1876

I hope they fit somewhere in with your Doolans
Good luck with your search
