I can share details of 40 Cheshire Wills.
« on: Wednesday 16 July 08 16:39 BST (UK) »
During my last 5 years of research I have obtained copies of 40 Cheshire Wills and Admons from Cheshire Records Office.  In keeping with the spirit of Rootschat I am prepared to share details of the contents of these documents. To comply with copyright I regret that I am unable to reproduce and send out copies (you must purchase your own from CRO), however, I can let you know any other names or places that appear in the documents and from those details you can decide if you have a possible match before ordering.  In some cases, if the will was 'one of mine' I have fully transcribed the contents.  Where available I can provide the transcription.  Here is what I have:-

How I envy you Nick!  Only found one will in a tree of 800!  My poor old Ag Labs were poor!

We've got Cheshire wills too, for both my family and my husband's.  I like the ease with which you can search the Cheshire wills too.  If only other counties had put the same kind of info on line.

Some of my ancestors were farmers or butchers, so I suppose might have been expected to have wills, but my husband's family were all hatters.  I wonder if in Cheshire it was the "done" thing to make a will even if you were poor, just to stop the squabbling between the children.  One of my Cheshire wills, actually lists all the children of the family and their respective spouses.  I already had that information, gleaned from censuses but it was good to have it verified.

Yes, You are right.  I am very fortunate and also lucky that the Records have been preserved so well in Cheshire.  The people at the Records Office are great and always very helpful.

I still have about 25 wills to order and I'm hopeful that my 75% success rate of matching them to my tree continues.

Sharing the information this way may also put me in touch with some otherwise unknown relatives which may result in mutual assistance.

Regards, Nick.

Hi Nick,

I am interested in your Robinson wills.  I have William Robinson married Ann Beckett in 1774 with children Nancy, Mary and William.  Daughter Nancy married John Moreton.

I don't know much about son William born 1783 but do have his date of death as 1848 from another researcher.

The wills are in the right place for this family.....  :)

Jean

PS.  The will images are copyright to CRO but transcriptions are your own and they are copyrighted to you.

Hi Jean,

I have three different Robinson Family branches in the maternal half of my tree.  I haven't connected them earlier on yet.

These are of interest to you.

William ROBINSON 1784 - 1848 born Gt. Budworth, Farmer
=
Mary PRESCOTT 1788 -1857 born Gt. Budworth.

Names mentioned in William's will are sons, William and Joseph, dear wife, Mary, and my sister, Nancy MORETON.  I believe that this is the son to whom you refer.

I also have the father's will - William ROBINSON (the elder) died 1818. This mentions son William, daughter Nancy MORETON, other daur, Mary and to confirm 'my friend and relation Allen BECKETT.

Also William ROBINSON, Marbury, died 1803 is probably his father, but I didn't prove it yet.

You will also therefore be interested in the will of George PRESCOTT (Mary's dad).

These wills are great. They contain lots of detail about property, possessions and locations.

Please send me a personal message and I can arrange to let you have the transcriptions.

.... anyway farewell for now my new distant cousin....

Nick.

Hi
thanks for your kind offer
I wonder if you would be so good as to look at the Wills of both Randle Lambs please. On the 1770 one, if there is mention of grandaughter or daughter Mary.
On the 1796 one if mention of daughter Mary (could read wife of Peter Dean )
Thanks

The 1778 will does mention 'Mary LAMB daughter of my son Randle LAMB'

There is a strong possibility that the Randle LAMB referred to in the 1796 admon is the son named above.  I know for sure that the 'Mobberley' Randle LAMB came from the Northwich area originally.  He was my 5 x Gt Grandfather.

In a somewhat ironic reversal, I started my life in Mobberley and now find myself in Northwich.

There is also another Randle LAMB listed in the 1660 Northwich Hundred Poll Tax records as follows:-

'Randle Lamb Lab & Elizabeth his w - 1. 0 '   (one shilling I guess)

This is another ancestor I am sure but I still have a lot of linking to do with this family.

Send me a personal message if you are interested in more information.
