Wilton Gaol and House of Correction
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 13:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have recently found one of my ancestors ( David Hyatt b.1827, Shepton Mallet ) was in Wilton Gaol and House of Correction, Taunton, Somerset on the 1841 England census.
He was aged 14

Any ideas how I could find out why he was there?? or any other info
I cannot find him on any other census or a death/marriage date for him?

I am at a total loss

any HELP would be great

kev

Somerset Record Office has the Wilton Gaol Description Register for 1839-1841.  It seems likely that your ancestor will have an entry there as he was unlikely to have spent more than 2 years in gaol at that age.  If you cannot get to the SRO yourself, someone will probably do a search for you.
All inhabitants of Axbridge, Somerset.

This is not really an update on the query but out of interest I work in part of what used to be Wilton Gaol and Peter Parrish who wrote the book worked there too until his retirement several years ago now

I found David Hyatt on the England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892.  He was convicted of "burglary, simple" and sentenced to "6 months and twice whippings"
