Grace Knight
« on: Friday 18 July 08 06:52 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Having real trouble finding Grace on the 1901 census.

The only real hit as it were i can get for her is a marriage of a Grace Knight in Bury in 1896. Now this is likely because although born around 1870 in Huntingdonshire the family by 1881 were living around Bury and most of her siblings married in Bury.

The two men on the same marriage are John Wycliffe Howarth and John William Shepherdson

Thats it - I feel like i tried everything, did she die, did he die, mis-spelt name, just Grace as where born - everything!

Thankyou

Jonathan

Hi Jan & Jonathan

I was just going to say that. I will say something else instead now ;D

Although the birth place of Grace is shown as Lancashire in 1901, she is the correct age and that marriage in 1896 in Bury seems to be the only instance where a John W Shepherdson married someone called Grace in the relevant timescale.

Sight of the marriage certificate (or register entry) should reveal who their respective fathers were.

The Knight family (from Huntingdonshire) lived in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church, Walmersley on the censuses from 1881.

Thankyou everyone!

My fault really, just to much of a perfectionist  ;D - Why that can't be MY Grace Knight, she was it says born in Lancashire.
Unless it hits me in the face then i've lost them in the blackhole that is a census.

Thankyou once again for all your help

I'm not sure if you're saying that you don't think it's your Grace or that you'd dismissed it previously because you're a perfectionist.

If everything else matches, then it's more than likely to be yours.

Unfortunately our ancestors and the census enumerators were not perfectionists.  The enumerator might have been a bit too enthusiastic in his use of dittos in the where born column, or whoever gave the information to the enumerator might not have known she was born in Huntingdonshire.  Or, if the enumerator took down the details verbally, then there could be any one of several reasons why the wrong place of birth is recorded.

There must have been hundreds of conversations with enumerators in the earlier censuses that went something like this:

"Birthplace?"
"Eh?"
"Where were you born?"
"Eh?"
"Where are you from?" (enumerator tries a different tack)
"Eh?  Speak up!"
"Oh, it doesn't matter ..." (as the enumerator writes ditto, thinking of the six more streets he's got to do before the end of the day)

Or replace the "eh?" responses with "can't remember"

Alternatively some of my lot do manage to answer the where are you from question with where they lived before they moved to where they were at the time of the census.
