Have you got your grandparents' marriage cert? If so, what did James say about his mother Mary Wingate? Sometimes you get clues from that. Also, what were the witnesses names at the marriage. Again, sometimes witnesses names can also add further details.

Yes def right people . But dawnie has done well to find that much as my mum told me my grandad was an orphan . So when i tried before i couldnt get any further than him

Have you got that 1920 marriage cert (available via Scotlands People)? The 1901 census and the 1911 census are also obviously important in giving you more info re William's early years.
