Lancashire School 1851 census
« on: Saturday 26 July 08 15:35 BST (UK) »
In 1851 there is a Parsonage House which has nine pupils age between 10 -15 yrs. Does anyone know what type of school this would be. I have been researching the family of Thomas Sims from Staffordshire and found a possible 10 yr, old pupil from Shelton staffs. staying there in 1851.   I wonder why he would be so far away from his place of birth and what would he be doing there.  Any help would be appreciated.

Prue.

Hello Prue
"Google" threw up a few websites for parsonage houses , but some were a little too deep to read on a hot Saturday evening (and also at any other time for me ! ) .
I get the impression they must have been a form of church school possibly even where the local clergyman lived or maybe a small boarding school , hence living away from home .
I expect one of the more well known ones would be Parsonage House , Haworth , West Yorkshire the home of the Bronte sisters who held positions as governesses themselves .
Good luck with your further research .
Eric

Thank  you both for  helping.  From the Census the Parsonage House  was  in Gressingham and in my atlas I found Gressingham half-way between Lancaster and Kirby on the River Lune. I haven't found any useful clues on google yet, still searching.
Kind regards,
Prue
