Hitchells Fishing Tackle Shop -Birkenhead.
« on: Monday 28 July 08 01:29 BST (UK) »
Hello ,

Found a connection with a Hitchell Family in B/head(Shoe makers) 1891 to 1901 on Borough Road- curious, if another member of the family had a Fishing Tackle shop on Borough Road in the 1960's/early 1970's.

Cheers
Dolly.

Hello,

Yes the Tackle Shop was on a corner, opposite to where Netto is now.
Husband recalls the shop as he used to buy his bait there in his younger years!. He told me this earlier today, after I had told him of a poss Hitchell connection in his FH Tree .

Cheers !

Hello Vin,

Welcome to RC.
The Hitchell Link is on my husbands side of the family. His Great Grandmother was Alice Davies,Alice had a sister Elizabeth who married Thomas Hitchell(bootmaker) b1866 B/head,died 1918 B/Head.

My husband in his teen years used to buy his fishing bait from Hitchell's and we wondered if the fishing tackle shop was part of the same family that belonged to the Bootmaker Hitchell's.
My husband had no idea he had a link via his great Aunt Elizabeth to the Hitchells untill I started researching his side of the family.
I have had contact from a Hitchell descendant in recent months who sent me 2 photographs of the Bootmakers shop on Borough Road taken in the late 1890's and confirmed that the tackle shop was also part of the same family.

Cheers
Dolly.

Hi Dolly it's a long time since I was on this site so my memory has faded, was it I who sent you the hitchell shop photos or have you made contact with another hitchell ?
Elizabeth Davies ( Hitchell ) was my grandmother.
regards vin

I used to take any old lead to Hitchells and he would buy it to make all his own weights for the fishing tackle ...and I would have said as late as 1981........

Hi there

I am new to this site. I stumbled across it whilst searching for my family history. I am a Hitchell. my maiden name is Hitchell and it's on my dad's side of the family. My nan just informed me that my family used to own the Fishing Tackle shop. I am very keen to find out any more information and if anybody has any photographs, I would be more than grateful to receive a copy through email.

I hope somebody sees this post as the other posts were a while ago. I emigrated to Australia 5 years ago so I can't find information on my family too easily.

kind Regards
Siobhan
