WARD - Nottingham
« on: Wednesday 06 August 08 19:48 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on my grandfather's family.  His name was Charles William Ward Sands (born June 1903) and immigrated to Canada in 1912 as an orphan in the Dr. Barnardo Home for Children (Nottingham).  He was placed in the orphanage in approximately 1906.  His biological father's name was Samuel Ward and his mother's name was Florence Smith Sands.  She married and divorced George Sands and lived common-law with Samuel Ward.  Together they had four children - Millicent, Henry, Charles and John.  Following her death, all four children were placed in the orphanage by their father, Samuel Ward, as he could not care for them.  However, when he placed them in the orphanage he added Florence's married name, Sands, to their surname.  My grandfather passed away in 1968 not knowing that he actual surname was Ward, not Sands.  This was discovered by my father when he wrote to Barnardo's for information.

We are trying to find relatives of Samuel Ward of Nottingham.  If you have any information at all, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for the replies.  From reading your reply I can now see that my grandfather, Charles Ward Sands had many half- siblings.  Would you be able to find any information concering the following and their families:

Thomas Sands
George Sands
Robert Sands
Samuel Sands
Albert Ward
John Ward

Once again, I thank you for your help.

Unfortunately it's always more difficult working forwards than backwards, and both surnames are fairly common, so there are several possible marriages/deaths in the index.  The only one I can be reasonably sure about is Samuel SANDS, as he is the only one with middle initial H on FreeBMD:

Marriages Mar 1924
SANDS    Samuel H
FAULKES    Alice M
Nottingham 7b 556

This is probably their daughter:

Births Jun 1924
SANDS    Amelia M    (mother FAULKES)
Bingham 7b 898
