Need Some Help Please - Dead End
« on: Wednesday 26 January 05 01:09 GMT (UK) »
I am searching my uncles family tree for him and he had given me some information, but couldn't remember any details about his grandparents, but everytime we speak his manages to give me more information that i didn't know before.

I have been researching what i can and believe to be going to right way with the grandparents, but i'm wanting to double check that i have got them correct on the 1901 census as his parents wouldn't of been married at that time.

The marriage would between 1910-1920 as the first child was born 1920.

Their names are James Lewis born Abt 1898 and Emily Weedon born Abt 1890.

I know i can go to Q and search and get the certificate easily from there, but it's getting the time to go up there so if there is another way some knows of getting the information i would be greatful. also it should be in the london area.

Thanks

Matt

Looking at the 1901 Census index, there is an Emily Weedon age 11 living in Chesham Bois, born Paddington.  There are 5 others aged up to 16 also listed - only checked age 6 - 16.  Unfortunatley James Lewis returns so many results that it is impossible to work out which one yours would be.  The marriage info does not show up on FreeBMD yet.

I'm not where they were born all i know is that Emily Weedon died in 1972 and was 72/74 years of age.

What i'm after is a marriage date for them and hopefully find out who their father's were then i know if i'm going the right way on the censuses.

Hi Matt

As you say Emily died in 1972 age 72 or 74, this would make her 10 or 12 in 1910 so i have searched for a marriage closer to 1920.
I have found a marriage of Emily WEEDEN
with husbands surname Lewis
1920 Oct, Nov, Dec
St. Olave
1d 396
Hope this sounds like the right place, if you want me to double-check it and find out if the husbands first name is James I will.
Let me know!

Hi Matt

The reference that Emily so kindly looked up for you is correct.
The groom is indeed James.

I have just been through all 4 quarters deaths in 1972 and cannot find an Emily Lewis that fits the bill, born to fit in with either of the Emily Weeden's I looked for in 1901.

The only one I had a tiny hunch about was one born Lambeth 29 August 1895

Do you know anymore about her death, when and where exactly?

The spelling on the GRO marriage index is with an E(WeedEn) by the way.

Ah Carol beat me to it!
-yes husbands first name is James
very likely to be the one.
These are the only details given on www.1837online.com - enough to order the marriage certificate, which you can do online from General Register Office
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content
usually costs about £7 i think?

I've also had to sift through information from relatives who have erratic memories.  My experience is that there is always some truth in what they remember, but it may not be 100 percent accurate.  For example my grandfather could remember names of all his siblings (his family was broken up when he was young), and got them in the right order, but ages totally wrong to the point where he thought his oldest sister was at least 8 years older than she was!  He also gave us the names he knew them by, which wasn't how they were registered, ie "Bill" was actually Charles William.  Because the ages he gave were wrong, I then made the wrong assumption about his parents marriage date, etc, so it took a while to sort out.
