Culross parish records - CONNEL
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 10:43 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with confirmation of my Connel's marriage please?

My James Connel & wife Christian were both born in Perthshire 1803c and in the 1841/51 & 61 census were living in Culross.  Their children were all born in Perthshire.

Did James marry  1) Christian BEVERIDGE  1 Mar 1823 Culross or
                            2) Christian MCKECHNAY 30 Nov 1822 Kilbarchan Renfrew.

I "presume" that it was Christian B because of the place names, but is there any way that I can back this up??  Or will it always be a 99% sure thing?

Thanks

If they died 1855 or later (which they appear to have done), either death cert would give the maiden surname. Also any of the children's marriage certs (if married after 1854) or death certs. would have the surname.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk should have all this info. It's pay to view but very reasonable.

The IGI www.familysearch.org might also list her maiden name on bpt/birth records of the children.

The IGI (extracted) has the children of James Connel and Christian Beveridge in Culross as:

1823 - Margaret
1825 - John
1830 -  William

Are these yours?

I see on the 1851 that they have a son, John, b.c. 1825 Culross so this looks very much like the James Connel/Christian Beveridge family.

Many thanks Gadget for your info - much appreciated!   :)

Yes it looks like Christian Beveridge is the one.  They are their children and James is listed as a weaver on son James' marr cert.  Because he marr in MSX mother's name is not listed - I recall that the Scottish mar certs do have more info including the mother's name.
Have not been able to locate parents James & Christian's deaths on various sites I have been using but have yet to try scotlandspeoples site.

Thanks for problem solved!!
