A WILLOUGHBY Mystery! Can anyone Help?
« on: Wednesday 13 August 08 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am trying to trace details of of my great gran's sister. It is a family tale that both my gran & great aunt told.

My great gran was Elsie Agnes Willoughby b1885 in Wedbourne, Liddington, Wiltshire. She had 8 sister's & one brother. One of the sister's was called Bessie Penny & at the age of 8 she choked to death on a button hook (used for gloves or shoes not sure which).

Now I can find no record of Bessie Penny. My gran was pretty 'hazy' on the name, but my firdt cousin once removed (my great aunt's son is pretty sure). Can anyone help locate her?

Edith Emily was the eldest child b1870 before her mother married. She used her mother's maiden name of Robinson. The other children are as follows.

Alice Louisa Willoughby b1874 Aldbourne
Mary Jane Willoughby b1876 Ogbourne
William Willoughby b1877 Aldbourne
Mary Willoughby b1883 Aldbourne
Elsie Agnes Willoughby b1885
Charlotte Ann Willoughby b1888
Lucy Kate Willoughby b1890

The only other thing I can add is that I have never found a birth for Mary b1883. She is in the 1891 census only. Also why have another Mary when your elder sister is called Mary Jane?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Suzanne

The only thing that I could find was a Beatrice Willoughby's death in 1892 Highworth, Wiltshire (All births of the other children were Highworth, Wilts except Mary Jane..are you sure she wasn't born 1875?). Beatrice was born abt 1886, died aged 6. Beatrice was daughter of John and Ann. When do you think your Bessie was born?

As for your Mary b.1883, i would suggest that Mary was likely to be her middle name. A lot of people used to use their middle name if they didn't like their first name. Sometimes parents were known to name a newborn after one of their other children that had already passed away, but I take it Mary Jane led a longer life..

Sorry it wasn't more helpful. What were the parents' names of these children btw?

Hi Shannon

The parents were Charlotte Willioughby (nee Robinson) & John. Mary Jane was baptised in 1876 in Ogbourne St George. The lady who looked for me could only find that one baptism though.

Thank you for looking though.

Hi Kathryn

I don't have your Matilda on my tree. I'll look later to see if one of the male Willoughby's had a wife called Matilda.

Suzanne, do you have this family in any censuses? It might help if we can see them all together as a family.

I found Beatrice with parents John and Ann on the 1891 census at RG12/1579/21/10 - children's names do not match with those you've listed. Father John is a weaver.

There must be another family of Willoughby's. Do you know the occupation of your John?
