Murphy and Rathpeacon
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 12:04 BST (UK) »
Mary Ellen Murphy was born in Rathpeacon in 1880.  Her mother, Katherine or Catherine died in childbirth.  Mary Ellen was the last of ten children, five boys and five girls.  Her mother's maiden name was Reeves.  The father was Timothy Murphy.  Mary Ellen later married Michael Hayes and lived in Blackpool, Cork until her death in 1953.  I have a lot of info on Mary Ellen but am very keen to find other branches of the Murphy family of Rathpeacon.

IGI has births for 4 of the children of Timothy Murphy and Catherine Reeves:
1. Charles born 27 Jan.1865 Whitechurch district
2. Thomas born 11 Nov.1866 Rath Peacon, Whitechurch
3. Owen born 17 June 1868 Whitechurch district
4. Eliza born 17 Aug.1872 Ireland

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there could be older children who will not have birth certificates.

Ahahdowney,

That is fantastic.  Thank you so much for that! Now I am going to show by complete ignorance by asking what IGI is?
Thank you for that excellent information.  Can't tell you how delighted I am!  It gives me something to start with.

IGI is International Genealogical Index part of LDS (Mormon) website www.familysearch.org. There are basically 2 types of records there- submitted and extracted.

Hi

One more to add

On the BIVRI(British Isles Vital Records Index)-a set of discs) there are two entries

one is for Thomas Murphy 11/11/1866(which you already have)
the other one is for Patrick Murphy born 17/3/1870(251)Whitechurch Cork

Parents for both are Timothy Murphy and Catherine Reeves

I've enclosed a link for the  Irish Family History Foundation
It's free to register and search but costs 5 euros to view each record.
It could be very expensive if you don't have the right record! - but thought you might like to have a look.

You may find some possibilities -and could try to match them up with the parish
.

Neptune,

That is fantastic!  Thank you. Catherine and Timothy's grandaughter (my grand-aunt) is, believe it or not, still alive and well and she will be amazed when I ring her with this info tomorrow.  I will try to use that site you mentioned to find out anything else I can.  I'm really delighted with what both you and aghadowey have told me.

Hi Ceallachain

You're welcome.
I hope you can find some more information - especially for your great aunt!

The Irish Family history site could work out to be expensive. It asks for 40euros to be put on the account but you don't have to put that amount on. I think I did 20 euros when I used it as I wanted to try 4 records.

Of course you can't be sure until you read the actual record.

Have you tried writing to the parish priest as he may be able to help - if the children of Timothy and Catherine were all baptised in the same parish.
There might even be a marriage record - again it's knowing the right parish.
Some of mine weren't baptised where they ended up living- I still haven't found
the right  one.

I don't know if you're anywhere near but it may be possible to find something out in the  local cemetery/graveyard.

You might also find some of your family on the 1901/1911 census for Cork.

Good luck

Neptune
