Burials in Lennel Cemetery/Dickson
« on: Monday 18 August 08 11:43 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Was wondering if any one had access to the Lennel cemetery records. I have my ancestors of the name Dickson buried there and would be interested in them and any other Dickson's.

Thanks
Linda

I don't have any monumental inscriptions but live close to Lennel and could have a wander around for you. Is there any particular time period that is of interest?

The cemetery is split into three parts, the old part is unkempt and overgrown, the two newer sections are easier to get around, i'm not entirely sure what dates relate to the two older sections (i believe there is some overlap).

Hi Glen,
Wow thank you so much for your offer, I would greatly appreciate any help.

I definately know of one headstone, is it possible to take a Picture at all if you can find it??  the details are on the front of the headstone it says, I believe, Jane Pringle aged 28 died 1795, spouse of George Dickson
daughter Margaret aged 12 died 8 June 1810 and then on the back of the headstone it says  George Dickson died 17 Dec 1829 aged 71 and Jane Mossman 18 Aug 1839 aged 81. This is my direct family and of course definately interested in any other Dickson's but that could be a challenge. I dont know where my lot are exactly buried in the cemetery, sorry, but recently acquired the above information from a headstone buriel index, that someone sent me.

Thanks kindly for your offer, I wish i knew this information when i was in Coldstream love the area.

Sincerely
Linda Lawless

Hi Linda

I will have a look over the weekend for you, if i spot anything i will grab some photographs too.

I did vist the cemetery a few months ago taking photographs of the church ruins within the oldest section, it was pretty overgrown at the time. The weather has been so wet this last few weeks i'm hoping it has been cut back a bit otherwise it will be like a very wet jungle!!

For now, some pictures, one of the church ruins and the other is the mort house within the ruins

This might be a bit awkward to read but it's a potted history about the site;

Glen

Hi Linda

I'm afraid it doesn't look hopeful. Apart from the overgrown grass and weeds, many of the stones are so badly weathered they are virtually impossible to read, those that can be made out are mostly far later than the dates that you posted. Other stones are laid flat and haven't been moved in many years.

However i did find these two in the old section, ironically one is fairly clear and is earlier than the dates you mention,

Archibald Dickson of London, who died Bartle Mill, April 16th 1792 Aged 32 Years, this stone was erected by his widow

I did find another more recent stone but need to try and decipher the inscription. Also i the newer section i know of at least two more headstones (again more recent events).

Thanks Beckey

Looks like the stone may have a slightly different inscription to what we first believed then?

I'm close to Lennel anyway so can pop back pretty easily and look again.
