Workhouse Records: John Thomas Clee
« on: Friday 22 August 08 15:11 BST (UK) »
I have the following information:-

Born: 17 Oct 1885, Onibury, Ludlow, Mother Elizabeth Clee (no Father)
Baptised: 31 Oct 1885 Stanton Lacey, son of Elizabeth Clee, New Road, Stanton Lacey
1891 Census: Ludlow Union Workhouse - John Thomas Clee, age 5, pauper
There is no mention of his Mother, Elizabeth Clee
1901 Census: Living & working in Liverpool

Is it possible to find information on how he came to be in the workhouse, what happened to his Mother and when he left?

My working assumption is that as she was present at his baptism she didn't die in childbirth.

Hello

There is a Death on BMD

March qtr 1888 Mary Clee aged 50 Ludlow 6a 443

Age wise a bit old but not impossible.

That would account for son being in Workhouse though.

Hi. I know the original post was a few years ago and I hope debc is still looking in! John Thomas Clee was my grandfather and I was wondering if you found anything out about his mother? I have only just started researching my family tree and I'm afraid that all of the older members of the family who may know something have died.

John's birth certificate lists Elizabeth as being a servant and I'm struggling to find anyone on the 1881 and 1891 census who would fit the bill. However, there was a Thomas Clee and an Elizabeth at a place nearby and they were both servants. Perhaps Elizabeth used Thomas's name for the birth certificate even though they weren't married.

Chris.
