Elizabeth T. Dunsworth
« on: Saturday 23 August 08 14:30 BST (UK) »
Do you have any info. on this woman .  She was born in approx 1882 in Co Cork.  She married a Frederick Hogton but have no date or place  was either in the West Riding or in Aldershot  where Frederick was in the army . At least their first child Mary Ellen 1907  was born in Aldershot, I think the 3 others were born in Huddersfield. Fredericks family were from Rotherham area and she had been staying with his parents while he was away on army duties.
I don't know when she arrived in England  and can't find her on a census
Please help   Wendy.

Was Frederick killed in WWI in 1914?

Ancestry has a WWI service record for a Frederick William Hogton b 1888 Rotherham who enlisted in June 1907 (unmarried) and was killed on 26.10.1914

No mention of any wife or family but an Elizabeth Hogton acknowledged receipt of his medals

The address on one of her letters is 4 Garforth St Aspley Huddersfield and is dated June 1921

Hi,
Yes ,Carol is right .There are two entries for the same? Frederick Hogton born 1888, Rotherham on the ww1 service records.
The one i looked at had his marriage mentioned to Elizabeth Dunworth on page 4.
To whom married.. 14.3.1904
Elizabeth Dunworth
Church of St David, Finbar, Cork.
Also mentions his children and their dates and places of birth.Aldershot and Huddersfield.
Also earlier, father and brothers names.
Best wishes
cathy :)

Hi

Well spotted

I presumed they were duplicate entries although one shows 12 images and the other 27 images

On both entries - his enlistment declaration in 1907 shows him as unmarried and aged 19yrs and 9 months

Page 26009 is a letter from his father in 1919 enquiring re a medal and address is 4 Garforth St Apsley

Page 26010 gives following info

Father Frederick and mother Ellen both of 4 Garforth St

Widow Elizabeth Hogton and children also of 4 Garforth St:

Mary Ellen 3.3.1907
Margaret 8.12.1909 (looks like 1907 but too soon after Mary)
Frederick Joseph 13.9.1911
Elizabeth Teresa 4.1.1914

His brothers and sisters and nephews etc are also listed

Hi Carole and Cath  Thanks for replies  This is brilliant.
Yes Frederick was killed in Oct 1914  at Ypers. I had seen the service records but silly me didn't realise it went beyond the first page.
So his enlistment shows him as unmarried  but Cath found a marriage in 1904 in Cork they can't both be correct. His first child was born in 1907  so I presume he married in 1904.
I don't suppose anyone has any info. on Elizabeth's baptism?

What Cath found is correct.  Ancestry are showing 2 entries for the same person but there are more pages on one than the other.

I would recommend that you download each one and save any that have relevant info on them so you can then print them off later

Page 26010 has the most info on it but there are a lot more pages

As Frederick was only b 1888 you need to try and establish Elizabeth's age if any is shown on the service records.  She may have been born later than 1882

Fred was born  in 1881 according to census info. The front cover of the service record is wrong because inside it says he was 19 years and 9 months old  and that was written in 1901. so 1881 is correct.
No age is written on for Elizabeth unfortunateley I am only guessing at approx 1882.

Hi

Sorry - Ancestry show his birthyear as 1888 on the WWI records and date on joining up document looked like 25th June 1907 not 1901.  Freebmd confirms he was b Dec qtr 1881

I thought he seemed very young to be marrying in 1904
