SLAVIN family
« on: Saturday 23 August 08 19:16 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help me. I have found James Slavin b1857 and Ellen SLavin b 1862 (Gibbs) with there son Francis Slavin b 1891 on the 1891 census living in Somerset. I cannot find them in 1901 and also I cannot find their marriage.

Thank you.

Molly

Nothing on Ancestry for either their marriage or 1901 details

I checked Ancestors onboard in case they had emigrated but no matching entry so I wonder if they were in Ireland in 1901

They were the only Slavin family in Somerset in 1891 and there are no more Slavin births in Somerset after 1891 on freebmd but they may have moved out of Somerset

Son Francis was registered as Frank James in the June qtr 1891

James died.

Ellen remarried John T Worthy (1898).

They are in Dorchester in 1901 (RG13/2001) indexed under Stowin:

John T Worthy, 60, tailor, b Totnes, Devon
Ellen Worthy, 39, wife, b Bristol, Glos
Frank J Slavin, 10, stepson, b Wolverton, Somerset
Arthur G Slavin, 7, stepson, b Camberwell
Dorothy B Worthy, 2, dau, b Sherborne (I think)

Thank you Carole and Richard for the information. Its funny how there is no trace of the marriage of James Slavin and Ellen Gibbs. But perhaps they were not married. I needed to find it so I could order it and find out the father of James because there is not much chance of finding the birth because he was born in Ireland.  Is there any way you find out when he arrived in England and where he was in 1880 census.

Thanks

Molly

I don't think you will be able to pin him down in 1881. There are some James Slavins, including a 25 year-old dock worker in Liverpool (RG11/3603), but no proof that any is yours. This one could be the one who is in Scotland in 1901, aged 43.

Added later: the Scottish James Slavin was 60 in 1891, so the 1901 entry is a mistranscription. His daughter was 30 in 1901, so it looked wrong anyway.

It is, of course, possible that James and Ellen never married, James hadn't died by 1898 and the 1901 James is yours. Unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

Have you looked for James' death? A James Slavin, 33, died in 1892 in Liverpool. Unfortunately the name is reasonably common.

Hi

Ellen re-married as Slavin not as Gibbs so it would be interesting to see if her marriage cert shows her as a widow

Hello
I am the granddaughter of Francis Slavin. I wondered if you managed to find out anything further about James Slavin, particularly around is early death.
I'd be grateful for any info you have on the Somerset Slavin family please.

Welcome to Rootschat.

If Molly doesn't reply to your question (I'm afraid I know no more than I originally posted), you may want to send her a Personal message; but you will need to make two more posts (however short, or even a smiley) before the system lets you.
