GERMANY: DEGENHARDT from Clausthal, Hanover
« on: Saturday 23 August 08 23:03 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping for some help from someone with access to german records with the DEGENHARDT familt of Clausthal, in the Hartz mountains, Hanover, Germany.

3 brothers, all in their 20's, migrated to Australia aboard the Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel from Bremen (sailed 1846-06-27). They were:
Johann Carl August DEGENHARDT
Friedrich DEGENHARDT
Gustav Julias Whilhelm DEGENHARDT

Also on that ship was 19 year old Carl Herman DEGENHARDT, from the same town. I beleive he may have been another brother or a cousin. He is my gt-gt-gt-grandfather.

In 1849, the brothers brought the rest of their extended family (parents, sisters, brothers-in-law, etc.) out aboard the George Washington under a government assisted migration scheme. Unfortunately, a cholera outbreak aboard the ship all but wiped out the group, including the parents, Carl Heinrich Christian DEGENHARDT & Johanna Dorothea Freidericke DEGENHARDT nee LADER/LATER.

I'm wondering if someone could confirm for me that Carl is part of that family, and supply me with a birthdate for him. He was born around 1826.

Cheers
Nudge

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/heerjeebhoyrustomjeepatel1846.htm

Might help if you not seen it. I am looking in this area for someone too, but not related to you. If I see a definate link I will keep you in mind.

Best Wishes

Hello Nudge,

How's your German?

The place to start is the state archives of Lower Saxony (Niedersaechsisches Landesarchiv). A quick look in their on-line database revealed 30 records for the extended Degenhardt family. The first three brothers you mentioned appear to have been living in Polsterthal when they emigrated.

http://aidaonline.niedersachsen.de/

Interestingly, your Degenhardts actually ran an emigration agency!

The attched PDF file contains all the 'hits' from the database.

G'day Greenemma,

Bingo!  :)

(Carl) Hermann DEGENHARDT and Louisa RHODES had a daughter, Louisa Jane, born 3 June 1861 in Kadina, South Australia. She is my gt-gt-grandmother.

I'm willing to exchange information on the Degenhardt & Rhodes families if you wish.

Hi Nudge
Still looking for my relatives, not related to the Dagenhardts, but saw this reference which you may already have.
DEGENHARDT, Carl Heinrich Christian; Occ Grubensteiger; age 58;         died Nov 2, on voyage.
DEGENHARDT, Johanne Dorothea Friedericke nee LADER; age 55;         died Nov 21, on voyage.
  DEGENHARDT, Johann Carl Lugwig; age 24;
   DEGENHARDT, Wilhelm Heinrich; Age; 16
   DEGENHARDT, Auguste Louise; Age;

From this I note that parents Carl and Dorothea are the only two of the Dagenharts's famlily who died on the voyage.
I am continuing with my reseach of my ancestesters, and if I come across any further references to the Dagenhardt's I will let you know. Incidently Grübensteiger is a head miner; mine foreman; pit boss; shift boss, which you may already know.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Kind regards
Raphael

 Dear  nudge67

I was very interested to come across your information on this site. Johann Carl August Degenhardt b. 1818 was my G-G Grandfather.  He later married a Lina ?(Augustine Alwine) Barth who travelled on the same ship (H-R Patel ) to Port Adelaide in 1846 .

They had 4 children.

I didn't know that their parents came out only to die of cholera. If you know anything more of the family please let us know.
