Charles Gabriel KING 1887-1918 Kent ENGLAND & Manitoba CANADA
« on: Friday 05 September 08 01:42 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have my great-uncle Charles Gabriel KING in their family tree? I know he went to Canada in the early 1900's and was either accompanied by or followed by his younger brother Samuel KING. One or both had Land Grants. The KING family is very complex and has a number of unexplained surname changes. The three older siblings of Charles Gabriel were all registered as GRASSBY. I have now got a lot of information about them but know virtually nothing about these two brothers. Samuel KING b 1892 in High Halstow (Hoo Reg Dist) Kent ENGLAND may have ended up in Australia. Any additional info would be gratefully received and in return I would be able to pass on some interesting data. Thank you for looking at this.

Marriages Dec Q 1916
Chesson    Minnie   King    Hoo   v2a   p1453

King, Charles G   Chesson   Hoo  v2a   p1453

But now I see you have his death from subject line...and the correct year of his birth...1887
so....what did  you need for Charles, then?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Because he declared year of birth as 1889 on signup...hard to say which Charles he is on entry to Canada if he didn't use his middle name...
Thanks for all the info. I really would like to know if he (or Samuel, his brother) left any family in Canada as it would be nice to get in touch with them and exchange family stories.
I see in the Australian thread that there is a suggestion that Sam Jr may have deserted from the army.  As Karen mentioned, the full army records will answer this question but I did notice the handwritten note on the side of his attestation papers that reads:
(Draftee) Discharged Demobilization ???
Can anyone else make out the last two words?  The dates are 1919 so it looks like he was discharged after the war.  Is this a cheap way to confirm he didn't desert?  I've never seen anything like this written on attestation papers before.  Anyone else have any thoughts?
Oh, I see now that Samuel was conscripted and did not join voluntarily like his brother.  I don't think I've every seen a conscription form before, how interesting.  Maybe comments were added to the conscription forms.
