Grey cells needed, researching Emma Walton
« on: Saturday 29 January 05 16:19 GMT (UK) »
I have an Emma Walton born Mar qtr 1878 B.Ham 6d 244 who married
Thomas Henry Elson in 1897 also Birmingham. The 1901 Census shows them both originating from Birmingham.
On their marriage certifiate  Emma's father is listed as George Walton
(Gas Stoker) and she being 19
I cannot find Emma or George on the 1881 Census.
The 1891 shows an Emma aged 13 working as a Domestic Servant away from her family, I think that could be her, but I still can't find George.

Any suggestions please
Regards Sandra

Where have you looked for the 1881 record? I believe there are gaps in the LDS on-line record but some people posting here have the census on CD-ROM and often will do a look up for you. If they are genuinely missing from the census, there could be a number of reasons, such as being in Scotland (for instance).

Thank you both for your replies.

I have spent hours on the LDS site and also Ancestry .com
I had assumed before the marriage certificate arrived that Emma's parents were Joseph and Deborah and in turn spent many a more hour researching them - only to be shot down when the marriage certificate stated George as father not Joseph.

Am finding the current delay in getting certificates frustrating - must learn to be more patient but I am very enthusiastic !!
Need to send for Emma Walton's birth certificate to check her mother and go from there I suppose - another 3 weeks wait !! Think I'll try and book a cheap package holiday in between then it won't seem so long to wait !!

Thanks again for for help
Kind Regards
Sandra

I spotted this intiguing one too - don't know what to make of it.
Would be surprised though if it's my Emma as she's listed as 5 rather than 2.

Looks like I've just got to get  Emma's birth certificate as I've no idea of her mother's name.

Will now go and have a nice glass of chilled wine while I ponder a little more !

Thanks a lot

Hi Sandra

Was there a given address on the marriage certificate that could perhaps be checked in 1901 and 1891?  Any clues in the names of the witnesses?

Casalguidi
Census information is Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Casalguidi,

Address on marriage certificate is 10b 3 crt. Great Francis St, Aston
and witnesses Charles Walton(maybe Emma's brother ?) and Annie Cammerer.

Have done a little bit of research on those names, but no success,
not sure how to check addresses.
Would be grateful if you could add anything at all

Cheers
Sandra
